Taylor Anderson Memorial Scholarship students of the Sendai YMCA International Hotel and Pastry School and their classmates welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Anderson of TAMF with a small welcome back party on April 18th. The students introduced themselves and made presentations about their studies and plans in English. There was a fun question and answer session as well where we learned more about each other’s countries and lives. The school now has an English teacher on staff. Some of them already had jobs lined up for after graduation. Working in Yokohama hotels is still a very popular choice of the students and their English proficiency is proving very helpful in finding jobs in the tourist industry, which is once again very active in Japan!
The TAMF board approved a plan to have a Taylor Anderson Reading Corner (bunko) installed at the Sendai YMCA. Endo-san, bookshelf maker and TAMF adviser, will work with Kato-san, the President of the school to design the bunko and upon it’s completion will also present a 100,000 yen book coupon for the school to purchase books.
Many of the students need scholarships to attend the Sendai YMCA International Hotel and Pastry School because of economic hardships, some caused by the 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and lately because of the pandemic they lost the chance to work after school. The Sendai YMCA and TAMF provide these scholarships jointly.
