Provide Physical Rehabilitation to Southern Haiti

Once again we want to thank you infinitely for the support with our foundation and rehabilitation center in Southern Haiti, your support has been essential for us.

These years have been very difficult for our country, in 2019 we had sociopolitical problems that didn’t allow our patients to come normally to the center, but FONTEN kept his doors open to them. In March 2020 we had the first cases of COVID in the country, FONTEN was closed for a moth, but as soon as possible FONTEN re start its activities in order to continue serving its community. In June 2021 another COVID started increasing again, we suffered the loss of some patients but FONTEN took all the security measures to continue providing services to the community. In July 2021, another political crisis hit Haiti, the president was murder which led to days of insecurity and stress within the community, even so, FONTEN keep it his doors open to help our patients as much as we can.

Two weeks ago, the south of Haiti was hit by an earthquake 7.2, that killed more than 2000 people and injured more than 12.000 people damaging the majority of the houses of our community.

Ones again FONTEN continue working to help as much is possible, bringing food, water and hygiene to camps, suppling assisted devices for injured people, doing early rehabilitation and treating patients injured on the earthquake, supporting different medical settings with supplies, among other activities.

From November 2019 to August 2021 we performed 16.020 therapy sessions and received more than 1300 new patients at the center. In addition to this, mobile clinics were held, training for parents of children with disabilities, delivery of 200 wheelchairs, vascular accident prevention campaigns among many other activities within our community.

We want to invite you to continue supporting our work through our new campaign Haiti earthquake response: Rehab & Prosthetics. From now on FONTEN is providing free rehabilitation for all earthquake victims as well as technical aids, in one month we hope to be giving free prostheses to more than 100 amputees during the earthquake. As a result of the earthquake, our center suffered serious damage, so at the moment we are treating our patients in a space in front of the center and analyzing what are the options to be able to build or repair our rehabilitation center, in order to treat our patients in a space adequate and safe.

FONTEN: January - April 2021 Report

Once again we want to thank you infinitely for the support with our foundation and rehabilitation center in Southern Haiti, your support has been essential for us.

At the clinic, from the month of January to April 2021 a total of 3839 sessions were held. Of which 802 were for children and 3037 for adults, 238 of these were new evaluations. A total of 600 patients were seen in total. In addition to that 137 orthotics were manufactured in the prosthetics and orthotics workshop and we repaired 8 prosthetics. 43 attentions were made for clubfoot children.

In our community program, different activities were carried out:

In JANUARY we carried out a wheelchair distribution in Camperrin together with two associations of people with disabilities, in this activity 17 people were benefited. In FEBRUARY, a workshop was held for parents of children with disabilities who attend FONTEN, the topics discussed were on psychomotor development and children's rights. In MARCH, we celebrated the International Down Syndrome Day, during the week of March 22 and 26, where educational sessions and flyers were delivered to FONTEN patients and families. In APRIL,we participated at Les Cayes Marathon in wich more than 120 athletes participated. On the 19th we received 5 Physical and Occupational therapist students from FSRL, University located in Leogane, for 7 weeks and for the end of the month a wheelchair and mobile clinic distribution was held in the city of Jeremie, 50 chairs were distributed and 33 people participated in the mobile clinic.

We want to share with you that on June 1st, we will be celebrating 5 years as Foundation which has been thanks to your support. For this 5th anniversary we have started the Campaign: "Your donation is a gift of hope" in which we invite those who wish, make a onetime donation or a recurrent donation and invite you to help us share this information with your family and friends.

FONTEN: October - December 2020 Report

During the months of October, November and December, a total of 2775 therapy sessions were held. Of which 605 were for children and 2,170 for adults, 209 of these were evaluations of new patients. A total of 505 patients were seen in total.

107 orthotics were manufactured in the prosthetics and orthotics workshop. In the clubfoot program for children, 58 follow-ups and corrections were carried out. An average of 300 patients were seen per month.

In addition to the work done at the center, different activities were carried out, in the month of October:

- We celebrate the World day of Cerebral Palsy, in which a community awareness activity was held. Together with FSRL students, we talked to the community and distributed brochures with information about Cerebral Palsy and how we should include children with Cerebral Palsy within the community. This activity was broadcast live on local radios and Facebook pages.

- A mobile clinic was held for the first time in the city of Jeremie (Southwest Haiti), 2 and a half hours from Les Cayes, where there are no rehabilitation services, about 40 people participated.

- For the international day of Occupational Therapy and day of service to the community, a High Blood Pressure Screening was organized in the community, more than 100 people participated.

In the month of December:

- We started the construction of a new Children therapy room, project funded by ROVIRALTA (Spain) through America Solidaria Haiti.

- A long term Physical Therapist Volunteer (1 year) from America Solidaria joins the team.

- For the World Day of Persons with Disabilities, an Inclusive soccer match was organized between the amputee soccer team and the local first division team America des Cayes at the local stadium. More than 200 people attended the event, which was also broadcast live on Facebook with more than 6,000 views.

- At the end of the year, a small pool party was organized for children with disabilities who are cared for at the center. Around 20 children and their parents participated in the activity in which there were games, food, swimming in the pool and gift giving.
