Protect Disabled Women from Gender-Based Violence

Women with disabilities are often doubly stigmatized—first for their gender, and again for their disability. In Nigeria, they are almost twice as likely to experience gender-based violence as their non-disabled peers (UN Nigeria, 2020). This stigma creates isolation, making it harder for survivors to speak out or access help.

Our project is dedicated to reversing this pattern in Guma, Benue State. We create safe spaces where women and girls can gather, share experiences, and receive the psychosocial and legal support they need. We also conduct awareness campaigns to educate communities about the rights of disabled women and to challenge myths and prejudices.

Deeply entrenched cultural norms continue to fuel gender-based violence and early marriage in Northern Nigeria. According to a 2023 study published in the National Library of Medicine, 41.5% of Nigerian girls are married before the age of 18. Girls with disabilities face even greater risks, often lacking advocates and support systems.

Our project tackles these issues by combining individual support with broader community engagement. We provide 50 women and girls with disabilities with education about their rights, access to legal and health services, and psychosocial support to recover from trauma. At the same time, we work with community leaders, religious figures, and local families to challenge and transform harmful beliefs.
