Protect Disabled Women from Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence affects an estimated 30% of women globally (UNICEF, 2023), and in Northern Nigeria, the numbers are even higher due to conflict, poverty, and weak social systems. Disabled women are particularly at risk, often facing violence both in the home and from the wider community.

Our project in Guma, Benue State, provides vital services to 50 women and girls with disabilities, helping them recover and build new futures. We offer psychosocial support, legal and healthcare referrals, and practical skills training that enables survivors to gain financial independence.

Child marriage remains stubbornly high in rural Nigeria, with nearly half of girls marrying before age 15 and 78% before age 18 in some communities (El País, 2024). For girls with disabilities in Guma, Benue State, the situation is even worse. They are often perceived as burdens or less able to contribute, making them more vulnerable to early and forced marriage.

Our project directly challenges these norms by providing 50 girls and women with disabilities with education, legal support, and safe havens where they can find respite and hope. We engage with religious and community leaders, parents, and teachers to shift the conversation and create a groundswell of support for girls’ rights.

We ensure that girls understand their rights and are equipped to make informed choices about their futures.
