Peace School for Afghan Refugees and Host Communities
Report –July 2020- Oct 2020
Ali is in 3 class in Peace School. Being eldest in 6 siblings Ali is sharing the responsibilities of the home while looking after his siblings. His father is a daily wager in construction sector and mother is working as domestic helper. The total household income is twenty thousand per month. They are living in a rented place. As the both parents are working so being eldest Ali use to look after his siblings in the absence of the parents. He said he can cook some food for the siblings if their mother use to reached late at home. He wanted to become a school teacher in future. He said the community is very poor and they can only bring change with education. He will serve his community as a teacher. He said my mother use to work very hard to meet our expenses, I will let my mother take good rest when I will start earning. He said the boys in the community used to help their parents to earn, but my mother never let me work as a helper, as she wanted me to focus on my studies.
Educational Documentary for the Kinds
The peace school has arranged a documentary and de briefing of the documentary for the students. The objective was to educate the children on the issues of Child Labour and Child Abuse. The Staff further discuss and de brief the students on the content and the students shared their views and shared their experiences as well. The aim was also to make students aware of the issues happening around. The COVID precautions were followed and implemented during the activity.
Community Visits to increase the enrolments in School:
The school staff visited door to door to increase the enrolments for the school. Due to COVID the schools were closed as per Government instructions and the community started sending their kids as daily wagers. The staff started mobilization in the community and educate them to send their children in schools instead of workplaces.
Independence Day Celebrations-Green the World:
The independent day was commemorated with the school children. The theme was like every year to green the world. The teachers aware the students about the need to plants and trees, and then the students sow the seeds of happiness. The students adopted the plants and were committed to look after them for their own environment and for the Mother Nature.
Mask Distribution
The mask distribution for the students was arranged. The staff briefed the students about the significance of the mask wearing and the importance of social distancing during the pandemic.
Staff Meeting
Regular staff meeting was held in the peace school. The overall progress and the future startigies were discussed in the meeting. the staff suggestions were also noted down regarding the reopening of the school and the sechudule of the classes following the COVID precautions.
Follow ups with Parents:
During the COVID period it was discussed and finalized among the school staff that the staff will ask mothers to regularly visit the school on alternative days, and took the homework and get the previous checked. However, the online classes were also under consideration, but the field realities were different as the availability of the smart phones was not possible at every home.
The practical option was to call the mothers or one of the parents at school and give them homework for the children. The mother brought the done homework with them and took the new from the students. That helped to cover the syllabus for the students.
Training of the Staff on COVID SOPs and protocols
Before re-opening of the school, the staff has arranged the training of the students on COVID SoPs and trained them about the different aspects of the COVID precautions. The support staff was also a part of the training. The use of disinfectants, mask, thermal gun was also practiced and explained.
Reopening of the School:
After the notification from the provincial Government, the schools were reopened, follow by the COVID precautions. The students were called on the alternative days and teachers ensured the social distancing and the mask wearing for the students.
