Peace School for Afghan Refugees and Host Communities

Report –July 2020- Oct 2020

Ali is in 3 class in Peace School. Being eldest in 6 siblings Ali is sharing the responsibilities of the home while looking after his siblings. His father is a daily wager in construction sector and mother is working as domestic helper. The total household income is twenty thousand per month. They are living in a rented place. As the both parents are working so being eldest Ali use to look after his siblings in the absence of the parents. He said he can cook some food for the siblings if their mother use to reached late at home. He wanted to become a school teacher in future. He said the community is very poor and they can only bring change with education. He will serve his community as a teacher.  He said my mother use to work very hard to meet our expenses, I will let my mother take good rest when I will start earning. He said the boys in the community used to help their parents to earn, but my mother never let me work as a helper, as she wanted me to focus on my studies.

Educational Documentary for the Kinds

The peace school has arranged a documentary and de briefing of the documentary for the students. The objective was to educate the children on the issues of Child Labour and Child Abuse. The Staff further discuss and de brief the students on the content and the students shared their views and shared their experiences as well. The aim was also to make students aware of the issues happening around. The COVID precautions were followed and implemented during the activity.

Community Visits to increase the enrolments in School:

The school staff visited door to door to increase the enrolments for the school. Due to COVID the schools were closed as per Government instructions and the community started sending their kids as daily wagers. The staff started mobilization in the community and educate them to send their children in schools instead of workplaces.

Independence Day Celebrations-Green the World:

The independent day was commemorated with the school children. The theme was like every year to green the world. The teachers aware the students about the need to plants and trees, and then the students sow the seeds of happiness. The students adopted the plants and were committed to look after them for their own environment and for the Mother Nature.

Mask Distribution

The mask distribution for the students was arranged. The staff briefed the students about the significance of the mask wearing and the importance of social distancing during the pandemic.

Staff Meeting

Regular staff meeting was held in the peace school. The overall progress and the future startigies were discussed in the meeting. the staff suggestions were also noted down regarding the reopening of the school and the sechudule of the classes following the COVID precautions.

Follow ups with Parents:

During the COVID period it was discussed and finalized among the school staff that the staff will ask mothers to regularly visit the school on alternative days, and took the homework and get the previous checked. However, the online classes were also under consideration, but the field realities were different as the availability of the smart phones was not possible at every home.

The practical option was to call the mothers or one of the parents at school and give them homework for the children. The mother brought the done homework with them and took the new from the students. That helped to cover the syllabus for the students.

Training of the Staff on COVID SOPs and protocols

 Before re-opening of the school, the staff has arranged the training of the students on COVID SoPs and trained them about the different aspects of the COVID precautions. The support staff was also a part of the training. The use of disinfectants, mask, thermal gun was also practiced and explained.

Reopening of the School:

After the notification from the provincial Government, the schools were reopened, follow by the COVID precautions. The students were called on the alternative days and teachers ensured the social distancing and the mask wearing for the students.

Case Study:

Nadia is 12 years old and student of 5th class in the Peace school. She is the youngest daughter out of 12 siblings. Her father was a daily wager, who got injured in a road accident and was not able to work since past 08 years. Her mother used to work as domestic helper in nearby communities. Due to family issues, Nadia’s brothers started their jobs in the their teenage. The sisters got married in early age as well. The mother always regrets that due to family issues she was not able to continue the studies of her elder kids. She sends Nadia and 3 other children to school for studies. Nadia is very quick learner and wanted to learn with keen interest.

One of Nadia’s paternal uncles send Nadia’s Proposal for his son who is 26 years old. The father was willing for her marriage and accepted the proposal. The mother took and stands and share the situation with the peace School principal. The principal proactively take over the situation and had meetings with her father and elder brothers. She convinced them that their daughter is too young for getting married and its also a crime under child marriage restrain act.  The father was resisting but he convinced on the points. Now Nadia has resumed her studies and wanted to become a dress designer in future.



Trip to Zoo

Before the closing of academic session, the school arranged an educational trip to zoo for the students. The students were so overwhelmed during the visit. For many students, it was the very first time that they were visiting zoo. The teachers explained them about the wild life and relate the educational trip with their text book lessons.


Visit to Lawrence Garden

The visit to Lawrence garden and botanical garden was arranged for the students. Students enjoyed the visit and spend quality time there. The visit of botanical garden at Lawrence garden was also a part of the trip. Students of the senior class were able to relate the briefing with their science and botany lessons



Annual Examinations

The annual examinations for the students of all classes held. The students were provided by the date sheet and prior to examinations a session with parents was also held to brie them regarding the examinations.


Commemorating International women’s day

Like every year, international women’s day was commemorated in the peace school. The session was held with the mothers on the significance of the international women’s day. The community was familiar with the concept due to regular engagement. The mothers were willing to bring a change in the lives of their children by ensuring gender balance in their lives.

Session was also held with the students. Since they were occupied with the examinations as well, after school session was held for a short period of time. Students took great interest in that.

Health Emergency and COVID-19


Awareness Raising-COVID-19, and Hygiene Kits Distribution

Due to COVID -19 health emergency was imposed nationwide. Due to the un expected situation people were un aware of the new pandemic. There was a need to sensitize the families regarding the current situation. School staff has distributed the hygiene kits and the IEC material for the community awareness.


Coordination with parents:

Due to pandemic situation, the school staff in in contact with the parents and following up on the given homework. They are in contact over the phone calls to ensure the safety of their families and themselves.

Case Study:

Sadia is a student of 4th class at Peace school. She is the eldest among 5 siblings. Her father is working as salesman in a garments shop and mother is a home-based worker. She used to stay at home and through middleman get some home-based work. She can hardly contribute 3-4 thousand per month in family income. They are living in a rented place where they all the 7 family members are living in one small room. She use to help her mother as an unpaid family helper in her order work and also looks after her siblings. Living in such a life she is still an outstanding student of the school and actively participates in every activity. She wanted to become a doctor in future. She said it’s so painful for her that her mother is sharing the family burden and also a victim of domestic violence. She said she wanted to enjoy the leisure time with the friends in community but she has to do a lot of work after school.

Colour recognition activity

The school conducts regular activities with the students of the Prep and the 1 class. The activity has been conducted to familiarize the students with the colours and their names. The activity helped students to recognize the colours in a very interesting way and the students enjoyed the learning.

Peace Activity

The students have regular sessions on the peace and harmony and they are also engaged with the different extracurricular activities. Students of the peace school participated in an in house activity where they delivered the speeches on interfaith harmony and also sing the songs of peace. That activity helped them to learn about the peace in the life and in their surroundings.

 Awareness Raising-World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day (WTD) is an official United Nations international observance day on 19 November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to achieve sanitation for all and end open defecation.

Keeping in view the community and the significance of the day, every year peace schools commemorates the peace school to raise the awareness among the students. Since the community is lacking the hygiene and the significance of the hygiene so that the activity helped the children to understand the concepts.

Universal children day

The United Nations' (UN) Universal Children's Day, which was established in 1954, is celebrated on November 20 each year to promote international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide. ... Universal Children's Day promotes the welfare of and understanding between children.

For Children's Day, many activities were organized by schools and, that focus on having fun and lively activities that kids of the peace school participated and enjoyed.

Mothers Meeting- 16 Days of Activism

Mothers meeting held at peace schools to mark the significance of 16-days of activism. The mothers were briefed about the significance of these days, and also a session held on domestic violence. Mothers took great interest in the session and also shared some of their experiences.

Result announcement

The result of the 3rd term examinations was announced and the successful students were awarded with the appreciation award. The students were encouraged in the session and principal and the staff appreciated them for their interest in the studies.

Children Literature Festival Lahore

The students of the peace school participated in the festival. It was a very exciting experience for the students as they never attended such activity in their lifetime. The students learned about the different science experiments and also attended story telling sessions there. These kind of activities helped the students to learn about the different experiences other than the text books.

 Snowman making

Keeping in view the winters, the fun activity was held at school. The students made snow mans with the cotton and with drawings on papers. That activity helped students to enjoy the weather. The students as they never saw the snow fall in their life, enjoyed and learned a lot from the activity.

Shahid  is the eldest among the 4 siblings. His father is a daily wager and the mother is working as domestic helper. They earn 18000 per month, living in a rented home and bearing the expenditures. Shahid  is the eldest among the sibling and a very sensitive child. He used to look after the siblings in the absence of his mother. He said I feel so much pain when I saw my mother as a domestic helper, as I know there is no respect for the women who are working in this sector. He said we do not afford the expenses of tuition and i want my siblings to excel in the academics. He used to guide his siblings in the studies and teach them in He wanted to become a professional so he can change the financial condition of his family.



Participation in speech competition

The students of peace school participated in the speech competition. The student’s from the 4th and 5th grade have participated in the competition. The theme was Independence Day. Student from the 5th grade was awarded special prize. The students from 40 public and private schools were there in the competition.


Prize Distribution Ceremony

Prize distribution ceremony for the position holders was held at the premise of Nazarya e Pakistan Trust. Parents and the principal were there to receive the prize


International peace day

International peace day was celebrated at Peace schools. The students were briefed in a session on the significance of peace among ourselves and within the communities and on the national level.

 Drawing competition on peace day

The drawing competition was also held among the students on peace day. With their creative skills students painted the themes of peace.


Teachers day

Teaches day was celebrated. The staff briefed students about the significance of the teachers day. Students made cards to show their respect and love for their teachers.


Mothers meeting

Mothers meeting held at peace schools where the mothers discussed the issues of their children and also shared their challenges of the daily life. The mothers were very satisfied with the studies of their children the mothers also demanded the up gradation of the school from primary to higher secondary level so they can continue the studies of their children particularly their daughters.



Visit to Lahore Science Mela

Khwarzami Science Society organized the Lahore Science Mela every year, where The progression towards a more scientifically immersed community continues as the KSS plans to organize the third Science Mela, in collaboration with the Ali Institute of Education. The LSM Series comprises of annual science festivals organized to cater to the need for the promulgation of scientific ideas and news among the general public.

Students from the Peace schools attended the Science Mela and learn about the different concepts beyond the textbooks. That was a very good learning opportunity for the students as well as a very first time for the students to learn about the new things. The students were very interested in the experiences and learnt much about the experiences.



Fun activity with prep class

The fun activity was arranged with the students of the prep class. Students blow the balloons and had fun with the little activity. The students enjoyed the activity. The students who won the prize was awarded with little prizes i.e chocolates and the sweets. The objective was to engage the students in the activity and to increase the interaction among the students and the teachers.


Global Handwash day

Global Handwashing Day is an international handwashing promotion campaign to motivate and mobilize people around the world to improve their handwashing habits. Washing hands at critical points during the day and washing with soap are both important.

The objective was to raise the awareness among the students about the significance of the handwashing, keeping in view the hygiene practices of the community and the students, it was important to educate the students about the significance of handwashing. The teachers guided the students how to wash their hands properly.



Visit to Peace School

Prize distribution ceremony and the staff appreciation ceremony held at peace schools. The students who participated in the competition performed their songs and presented their speeches in front of the distinguished guests.

The president FACES Pakistan and the secretary general appreciated the performances of the students and also awarded them with prizes. The staff was also appreciated for the efforts for the students. The principal was awarded with shield and the prize for her remarkable contribution towards the improvement of the school.

The students were so anxious to participate in the drawing competition to be held on 21.10.2019. keeping in view the increased number of students, who were willing to participate, the principal and the teachers set the criteria for participation in the school and


Drawing capitation at Alhamra

The inter school drawing competition held at Alhamra arts council, Lahore. Students from the peace school participated in the competition. Students draw the theme of peace, and spring. The students were awarded by the certificate of appreciation there.

Polio Awareness Campaign


Keeping in view the sensitivity of the issue, peace school is a part of District health department awareness campaign to end polio. In this regard the meeting held with the representative of the polio campaign, district health department and the management of the peace school. In the meeting it was decided that the peace school will take an active part in community awareness and the Polio awareness camping and the World polio day, awareness session walk with district health department. On world polio day an awareness session held at peace school and the walk within the community with the students and the influential of the community held.

Report –August 2019

Nida student of 5th class is the eldest among the 3 sisters and 3 brothers living in a small rented place of Akram Park.  Her mother is working hard as a domestic house keeper and earns for the future of her children. The mother is committed to educate all her children so that they can earn a respected life and change the poverty cycle. Nida starts her day in helping her mother in household chores and then she joins the school. She is so keen and focused in her studies. Her father is working on daily wages in a nearby factory and both parents earns a little money after a hectic labour. Many times, they use to sleep hungry as the father earns nothing, the major chunk of her mother's income spend on the rent of their home and the utility bills. Nida used to help her mother in her job in weekends, and often look after her siblings in absence of her mother on weekends.  Nida has also participated in the speech competition held during Independence Day celebrations and she also won the prize. Her wish is to become a teacher in future so that she could educate many deserving children.

During the two and half month Summer vacations Nida tried to help her parents to earn some extra money. She also spent a good time in the summer school activities at Peace School where she was able to learn some good things which could help her at home.

During the summer school the students were engaged in the studies to cover their syllabus as well as to engage them in the extracurricular activities. The teachers took the art classes and arrange the sessions for the students. It was important during the sessions to keeping in view the surrounding factory area and increased incidents of the child abuse, teachers arrange orientations and sensitization sessions for the students. they also briefed them about the child protection methodologies. Nida and her friends enjoyed the summer school activities.

During the summer school there was also a story telling session at the Peace Schools, the main objective of the activity was to give exposure to the students about the different stories. Nida and all her friends at school enjoyed the participatory session and enjoyed that experience for the first time in life.  Their interest of reading books was seen by all the teachers and this session was very much appreciated by the parents. All the students were awarded with the different story books and game kits.

While the school reopened in the month of August Nida and her friends re-joined school her teacher told them that through FACES Pakistan now, we small library at school.  Nida and her friends were very happy to learn about this and told the teacher about their experience of summer school and summer holidays.

Nida enjoyed the celebrations of the 72nd anniversary of Pakistan Independence Day on August 14, with traditional fervour and enthusiasm as several activities were arranged at Peace Schools to mark the occasion. All the students were briefed about the importance of Independence Day and its celebrations. Besides, the Peace Schools have arranged art exhibitions, declamation contests, national songs competitions and sports competition to mark the celebrations. Peace Schools children enjoyed the festive occasion with fireworks, face-painting, eccentric get-ups, and other fun and games. The students of the Peace School celebrated 72nd Independence Day in a different way, they started a campaign of adopting the trees in the community and plant different trees in the surroundings, outside their homes and outside school. Some of the students of Peace School participated in the national song’s competition with reference to 72nd Independence Day of Pakistan. Three of the best students of Peace Schools participated in the competition where they compete among the 71 students of different schools of Lahore. Two students of Peace School won prizes in this competition.

The FACES Pakistan’s Peace Schools have actively been engaged in planning and execution of programmes to add local colours to the events. Meanwhile, the Peace School buildings were also illuminated to celebrate the Independence Day. Special prayers were offered in mosques at dawn for peace, solidarity, and prosperity of the country.

As the school has reopened in the month of August and the new year term begins the 1075 students of the PEACE schools urgently need new books. FACES Pakistan PEACE School requests the donors to help our initiative so that the quality education and learning continues.  The children also need the new uniforms, bags, shoes and story books. Our current fundraising campaign is focusing on providing these basic needs of these students.
