June Update Report - Sewing, weaving, & community

By Averi Becque | Project Coordinator

Beautiful palm baskets being woven
Beautiful palm baskets being woven

June has been an exciting month of expansion for our microenterprise project to two new states!

Until now, we have run our microenterprise projects with groups in the states of Hidalgo and Oaxaca. We are pleased to report that in the month of June we expanded to three new communities in Michoacán and one in Puebla, bringing valuable opportunities to new groups of women and expanding the scope of impact of our project.

The women in the new communities have already started small businesses by drawing on preexisting skills and traditional local customs. In Michoacán, groups of women will soon start selling the woven baskets made of palm and embroidered goods that they produce. In Puebla, they have started a sewing business. In June, the participants attended ¨I want to, I can¨ workshops  and learned the life skills and financial skills necessary to run a small business. The opportunity to work outside of the home and support their families gives these women a sense of autonomy that is truly empowering.

We trust that these women will run successful microenterprises for many years to come, and share their knowledge and success with others! Your continued support will enable these new groups and their communities to flourish.  Thank you!

¡Gracias!
