I decide: Family Planning for all

Since 2022, APLAFA's Maternal and Infant Care in Panama Project has benefited 17 women and their babies across four provinces in Panama: Chiriquí, Veraguas, Colón, and Panamá Oeste.

Women participating in the program have accessed comprehensive health care throughout their pregnancies at no cost. This includes HIV and other sexually transmitted infection screenings, gynecological and prenatal consultations, obstetric ultrasounds, general examinations, and nutritional consultations when necessary. Additionally, upon completing their pregnancy, women are provided with a long-acting contraceptive.

For newborns, APLAFA offers pediatric care up to three months old, including general examinations and early stimulation appointments if needed.

This project addresses the most common causes of maternal and child morbidity and mortality, particularly the lack of access to prenatal care due to structural issues such as poverty and inequality.

Furthermore, this project contributes to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3, by preventing maternal mortality and avoidable newborn deaths, providing women with the opportunity for a safe pregnancy; SDG 5, by ensuring women have access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning; and SDG 10, by fulfilling the mission of leaving no one behind.

APLAFA, through the Maternal and Infant Care Project, in coordination with community leaders and health centers, has successfully benefited four women residing in the province of Chiriquí, located 445 kilometers from the city of Panama.

All of the women who benefited have given birth to four healthy babies, who have received the necessary pediatric care; in addition, long-acting contraceptives have been made available to the mothers.

It is important to highlight that two of the beneficiaries are part of one of the most representative indigenous populations of Panama, the Ngäbe Buglé; a community that generally faces multiple barriers to accessing comprehensive health services, including prenatal care.
