I decide: Family Planning for all

In Panama, in the year 2021, 42 women died from preventable causes related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum; 2 of them were teenagers aged 15 to 19.

APLAFA's Maternal and Infant Care Project contributes to preventing maternal and infant morbidity and mortality by addressing the most common causes, such as the lack of access to prenatal care consultations, due to structural situations like poverty and inequality.

Through the project, APLAFA provides pregnant women with:

• HIV and other sexually transmitted infection tests
• Gynecological and prenatal care consultations
• Obstetric ultrasounds
• General exams
• Nutrition consultations if necessary
• At the end of the pregnancy, a long-acting contraceptive is made available to women.

In the case of newborns, APLAFA provides pediatric care for the first three months, general exams, and early stimulation appointments if needed.

This project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 3, as it prevents maternal mortality and preventable deaths of newborns, giving women the opportunity to have a safe pregnancy; Goal 5, as it ensures women's access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning; and Goal 10, as it fulfills the mission of leaving no one behind.

Since its inception to date, the APLAFA's Maternal and Infant Care Project has benefited 13 women and their babies from four provinces in the country: Chiriquí, Veraguas, Colón, and Panama Oeste.

APLAFA is a non-profit non-governmental organization that has been operating since 1965, with the mission of contributing to improving the quality of life in the Republic of Panama by offering excellent sexual and reproductive health and education services, defending and promoting sexual and reproductive rights. In the last 5 years, APLAFA has provided 1.5 million health and educational services, directly impacting 218,034 people.

APLAFA's Maternal and Infant Care Project continues to impact the lives of women in Panama. From its inception to the present day, we have successfully benefited 13 women directly and a total of 32 individuals indirectly. These individuals come from socially vulnerable areas, facing poverty and difficulties in accessing education and comprehensive healthcare.

Most of the women benefiting from the program have multiple children and a secondary level of education. APLAFA's Project provides them with the opportunity for safe pregnancies and, upon completion, the option of long-lasting contraception to help them strengthen their life goals.

Through the Maternal and Infant Care Project, APLAFA has assisted women from four provinces in the country: Chiriquí, Veraguas, Colón, and Panama Oeste. We offer healthcare and support to pregnant women, covering their laboratory expenses, all prenatal check-up appointments, and in some cases, nutritional care. Once the babies are born, they receive pediatric care and early stimulation for three months.
