Help Syrian Women Rebuild Their Lives

For families displaced by years of conflict in Syria, losing official documents is more than an administrative problem — it can mean losing access to education, healthcare, legal protection, and even recognition before the law.

On April 12th, seventeen women gathered for a practical session dedicated to one urgent question: how can they reclaim their legal identity after years of displacement?

During the meeting, participants received clear guidance on the procedures required to document births that took place during conflict, especially in areas where official registration systems had collapsed. They also explored legal alternatives available when direct registration is no longer possible, including court procedures designed to protect children from future obstacles related to nationality, schooling, and civil rights.

The session also addressed marriages conducted outside government-controlled areas. Women learned how these marriages can later be formally documented through religious courts using witness testimonies and legal verification procedures.

Beyond legal information, the gathering created a safe space for women to ask questions, share experiences, and better understand rights that many feared had been permanently lost.

At the conclusion of the session, participants completed a survey that will contribute to ongoing advocacy efforts and a broader research initiative focused on the legal challenges faced by displaced Syrian families.

On April 9th, a third group of 17 women joined the program — many of them hearing for the first time that the State holds legal responsibility for harm caused either directly by its agents or through failure to provide protection.

The session explored who is obligated to provide reparations, emphasizing that victims do not need to wait for a criminal conviction to claim their rights. It also introduced the role of administrative programs — such as government-established funds and mechanisms — which can provide support to a larger number of victims more efficiently than court proceedings alone.

This understanding gave participants a clearer view of the different pathways available to them, helping transform uncertainty into informed action, and encouraging them to take the first steps toward claiming their rights.

To further support individual needs, private legal consultations were offered, providing a safe and confidential space for participants to seek personalized guidance.
