Charity Centre for Children and Youth Development (CCCYD) is a Nongovernmental Community Based Organization (CBO) registered with the registrar of NGOs in Zambia under the Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare. The organization was initially registered with the Registrar of Societies under the Ministry of Home affairs in Kasempa District in 2005 before opening the office in Solwezi District in 2010. CCCYD was created with the aim of providing educational support for orphans and vulnerable children, Youth and women with vocational skills training and micro-entrepreneurship on a premise to provide self-reliance among the target populations. The organization has been approved by Government as public benefit organization under the income Tax Act and Customs and Excise Duty Act of the Laws of Zambia.
This report highlights the developmental activities that the organization had implemented during the year starting January to December 2018.
During the period under review, the organization undertook the following projects:
- Establishment of Fortune Community School in Humphrey Mulemba Villa area along Kansanshi mine Smelter Road Near Solwezi Airport.
- The organization in 2017, constructed a 1x2 classroom block for orphans skills training and provision of primary education in Humphrey Mulemba Community. In January 2018, the school was opened with the total enrolment of 295 pupils from Grade one to six.
- Construction of 1x4 classroom Block at Fortune Community School
The organization in February 2018, received the grant amounting to Zmk 399, 141. From the Australian Embassy in Harare after the submission of a competitive grant application which we submitted in 2017.
The construction started in February 2018 and was fully completed in September 2018.
This project is helping provide both academic and vocational skills education to orphans and vulnerable children in the Community of Solwezi District of Zambia.
This will help educate orphans and vulnerable children allowing them to remain in school and improve on their life and contribute to development of the community and the national at large. It will reduce the burden the guardians have taken up of taking care of orphans left behind by their relatives and this will also reduce poverty and crime in the community which is on increase as a result of children being found on the street. Education opens opportunities in the life of an individual.
- Vocational Skills Training
The organization has trained 5 young people in knitting skills
- Micro-Entrepreneurship Program
In September 2018, the organization signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Planet Startup based in United States of America. The purpose of the MoU is to to establish a cooperative relationship to promote entrepreneurism within Zambia and other nations with the goal of helping young adults to become leaders in their nations by starting and growing their own Internet-based companies. So far, we have a class of 25 youths attending online entrepreneurship skills training in Mongu Western Province of Zambia.
This has been an exciting new stage in the organisation’s development. Our aim is to improve the income levels of vulnerable people particularly the youth micro-entrepreneurs in Zambia. Aditionally, planet startup is also providing starteup capital of $50 loan for interested students. So far, we have received the sum of Zmk 5800.00 which will benefit 10 students. Though we are providing this starterup loans, our hope is to see people becoming economically independent. This initiative has been received with great enthusiasm by Zambian youth who are looking for the opportunities to set up and improve their businesses to support their families and communities.
This project is a good initiative for poverty alleviant but needs more support from donors and other stakeholders interested in the welfare of poor youths in Zambia.
- Online Fundraising on Global-giving platform
In our efforts to raise money for orphans and vulnerable and for the support of running Fortune Community School, the organization started the online fundraising campaign in June 2018 under the project: Help provide education support to children in Need. As at December 31st 2018, we had raised $526 out of the target of $48,000.00
- Fortune Community School Teacher Recruitment
The organization in January 2018, recruited 4 volunteer teachers who are helping provide the education service to children in Need within Humphrey Mulemba community and the surrounding areas.
- We have Four (4) female teachers and One (1) male teacher
- Establishment of Charity Centre for Children and Youth Development in United Kingdom (UK)
In February 2018, our organization was registered as a Charity with the English Charity Commission in UK as an overseas organization. The purpose of the establishing CCCYD UK is to help with fundraising strategies within UK. However, since its establishment in February nothing has been done and we are still waiting for the Trustees who established the organization to open the Bank account before any idea on fundraising can be executed.
Challenges
Besides the great achievement the organization had scored during the period under review, the organization is facing a lot of challenges in the implementation of the planned activities which have been highlighted below:
- Lack of officers on permanent establishment.
The organization depends on voluntary labour to provide services to the community as a result it compromises the efficiency and effectiveness on the service delivery. This is anchored on lack of adequate financial support from potential donors.
- Lack of clean water supply.
Due to lack of adequate financial support, the school that has been established by the organization has no source of clearn water supply as we depend on water from swallow wells which is not safe for human consumption
- Lack of Electricity at the school
The organization paid for electricity connection in December 2017 and up to date ZESCO has not connected the school with electricity, as a result we have failed to provide computer skills and other services that needs electricity supply at the centre. The organization in 2017, received 10 computers and 10 monitors which were part of the humanitarian goods donated by Crossroad Foundation from Hong Kong.
- Lack of Books and Furniture for the School.
Due to lack of funding, the organization could not procure enough books for the school. As a result, pupils are sharing books for their studies and in other classes; we only have one copy for the teacher. Secondly, the school has no adequate furniture apart from the 100 chairs and 100 classroom tables donated by Crossroad Foundation. The new whole 1x4 classroom block funded by the Australian Embassy has no furniture as it was not part of the funding budget.
- Lack of Transport
The school currently need a bus to transport children to and from School, failure to which the organization will only concentrate on the children within Mulemba area.
Way forward.
The organization must intensify on fundraising strategies and establish many connections with different funding agencies from within and outside the Country as we look forward to also extending our services to other parts of the country.
