Our heartfelt thanks to you

The Centre recently hosted a Christmas party
The Centre recently hosted a Christmas party

With Christmas upon us and the new year approaching we want to send you our heartfelt thanks for helping Filipino communities prepare for disaster.

Thanks to your generosity we recently provided the “Extension” area of Banaba with a flood rescue boat. This new boat, called “The Bukluran” - which means “Bonding Together”, will work alongside the previously provided “Helen Thompson” rescue boat to protect families living in Banaba Extension from floods.

The Bukluran is smaller than the Helen Thompson and can access narrow alleyways that the Helen Thompson can’t. The two boats will complement each other perfectly and ensure that help is never far away when disaster inevitably strikes again.

While working on The Bukluran we’ve also continued to fundraise to equip the Banaba Livelihood & Evacuation Centre. And, with your incredible support, we’ve now raised enough to continue installing cubicles to provide privacy to families during evacuations.

Earlier this year we completed the installation of nineteen cubicles on the building’s first floor. This was a great start but less than half of our overall target. So, we’re excited to soon be starting work on providing another seventeen cubicles on the building’s top floor, and a further seven on the ground floor.

Once complete these cubicles will allow forty-three local families to shelter in safety and with dignity. Thanks so much.

It’s brilliant to see this progress on the Evacuation Centre but it’s also great to see the building being used so much by the community outside of disasters too.

Just last week children from the community dropped by for a wonderful Christmas party with games and gifts for everyone. The kids had so much fun as you can see from the attached photos.

While it was another organisation who supported the party the truck that you helped send to Banaba was put to great use helping transport the children safely to and from the Centre. Our heartfelt thanks for this too.

We’ll keep you posted as our work in Banaba continues, and if you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email Andy@IDVolunteers.org. I would be delighted to hear from you.
