Youth Cares Progress Report - September 2017

Kids After Winning The Music Contest
Kids After Winning The Music Contest

Thank you for making it possible for the Tekeshe Foundation to continue providing the Youth Cares program to rural youth in Chipinge. This program is at the heart of our organization and is our strategy for empowering young people to grow up to be successful well-balanced citizens. It is based upon the principle that young people need more than just academics, they also need to be taught life's lessons which are not taught at a desk in the classroom. Here is an update of what we have accomplished together through the Scout and Cultural Music Programs offered as part our Youth Cares Program:

1. Cultural Music and Poetry Program
This program is at the heart of our organization and is our strategy for empowering rural youth to engage in their cultural heritage and to encourage them to study and perfom music. We are please to announce that the kids who participate in our program were the winners of the music contest held in Chipinge last month. You can see the faces of the kids in this picture after they won the contest. Through your donations we were able to provide them the African costumes they are wearing. We are very proud of these kids. They have come up to speed quickly learning how to play the instruments. They are so talented that they are even getting invitations to play at weddings!

2. Scout Program
We are pleased to announce that on July 28th - July 30th a scout camping event was held in Rimbi village. The Manicaland Province Scout Association Commissioner from Mutare attended the event. As you can see from these pictures and by the testimonals given by some of the scouts, the event was a big success!

In Their Own Words By Some Of The Scout

"This was my first time to attend a scout camping event. I would like to thank the sponsors who made this event possible. We had a very good time. We learned so much. One of the things we were taught was that we have to behave as gentleman. When we are playing with the girls we have to show them respect and conduct ourselves appropriately..."

"I want to thank the sponsors for the camping event. We had a very good time and the food was very good! We learned a lot. We were taught that charity begins at home and that we must obey our parents. We were also taught that we must care about our communities and our country. One example the commissioner gave was that if we notice that someone left the tap running, maybe at school, it is the responsibility of a scout to close the tap. It doesnt matter who left the tap running, a good scout cares enough to correct what is wrong..."

"I also want to thank the sponsors for the wonderful time we had at the scout camping event. We learned how to survive in the forest. We were also taught how to make a fire, how to cook an egg using the shell of an orange and how to tie knots. One thing that the comminisioner stressed and it resonated with the majority of the scouts was the importance of obeying the parents. I know for me and many other scouts, our behaviour towards our parents will be different going forward. Thanks again for such a wonderful time! "

Thank you so much for making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged rural kids!

Best wishes,

Thelma
