It’s been a trying start to the summer for the children at the Hands Together to Defend the Children (HTDC) Orphanage. With the start of the rainy season comes a spike in malaria risk, and two of the children have fallen ill.

Happily, thanks to the support you provided, the directors had the resources they needed to get the sick children to the hospital and provide for their needs while they received treatment. Today, everyone is on the mend, and looking forward to an exciting summer.

This Friday is children’s day in Haiti, and as a registered orphanage, the kids at HTDC will be preparing and exhibition and performance to illustrate the creativity and beauty of Haiti’s children. This important exhibition will be attended by the ministry for child protection in Haiti, and the kids are all very excited!

As they prepare for the exhibition, the staff are also gearing up for another summer camp at the orphanage. The kids will be working on art projects, learning English, going on field trips and attending fun classes on working together. These enriching activities ensure that the children’s education won’t stop just because the school year is over.

Without your support, a swift recovery from illness would be out of reach for the children at the HTDC orphanage, let alone a fun summer camp! You have changed these children’s lives in so many ways, and we can’t thank you enough.

This summer we’ll be keeping you updated on all the fun you’ve made possible in Haiti with photos and stories from the summer camp. We hope these updates help bring home for you how important you are to these lovely kids.

Thanks so much for all you’ve given, and our warmest regards.

She's thriving - thanks to you!
She's thriving - thanks to you!

We continue to be astounded by your generosity! We last emailed you in March about GlobalGiving’s matching day asking you to dig deep and give what you could – and what an extraordinary response we received.

In just one day, you gave $2,175. Your fantastic response means that we’ll be able to meet the orphanage’s most pressing current need: A generator.

Government inefficiency in Haiti means that much of Port au Prince has not had power for several weeks. Without electricity power the children are enduring 90 degree heat without the comfort of even a fan. The orphanage can’t pump water to its roof without power, so there is no running water. Perhaps worst of all, without lights the children can’t make it to the bathroom at night.

Any parent can imagine the difficulties of managing more than 20 children without electricity for weeks on end. Thanks to you, the orphanage directors and staff won’t have to face those difficulties any more.

Your fantastic support is helping the orphanage directors reach their goal of ensuring that all the children living at the orphanage feel that they’re living in a family. For children who have already lost their parents, that family environment couldn’t be more important.

Families in the US are also marking the importance of family next week with Mother’s Day. If you’re thinking about Mother’s Day gifts we hope that you’ll consider making a donation as a gift to your mom. When you make a donation in honour of your mom, GlobalGiving will send her a lovely card. Cards can be emailed, mailed, or printed at home.

GlobalGiving tribute cards make fantastic, meaningful mother’s day gifts. And as a bonus, GlobalGiving will be awarding financial prizes for the organisation which receives the most mother’s day gift cards between May 1st and 7th.

We hope that this mother’s day, you’ll choose to give mom a gift that also helps Haitian children build a better tomorrow. You can easily send your gift by clicking here.

Thanks so much for your inspiring support and our warmest regards from Haiti.

Healthy and Happy Thanks to You!
Healthy and Happy Thanks to You!

On Wednesday, March 14th (that’s today!), GlobalGiving will be matching donations. You’ve already given so much, but we hope that you’ll dig deep and give a little more.

By continuing your inspiring support of the orphanage, you bring them closer to their next set of goals: Building a permanent home on the land they’ve already built and investing in a business to make the orphanage sustainable. We asked the orphanage director, Carlo, why a house they own would be better than a rented house.

“…we hope to one day be able to purchase a home so that the kids will always have a home to come back to, more space and especially so that they can feel like they’re living in a family.”

You’ve already made such a huge difference in Carlo’s life and the lives of the children in his care. These are children who lost parents in the earthquake and have lived on the street. Because of you, children like Nicolson, age 11, are enjoying a whole new life and dreaming about what they want to be when they grow up.

“Life makes sense at the orphanage, I like having volunteers coming and bringing toys and playing with us. I also like the school because I want to be a lawyer. I want to be rich and help other people.”

Today, March 14th, any contributions received will be doubled, and we hope you’ll be able to share this page or donate yourself to ensure that Nicolson and all of his friends can reach their dreams.

Thanks so much for your generosity, and our warmest regards.

The New Baby
The New Baby

Since Christmas, the kids at the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage have been going from strength to strength. In a country where so many children face an uncertain future, you have given these kids a safe place to live with the love and support of motivated staff who have the resources to meet their needs.

We’re excited to welcome a new child to the orphanage – a premature baby who was abandoned in the local community. Before the staff of the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage gained your support, they were forced to turn children away who were sick and needed care. But today thanks to your generosity, they’ve been able to give another Haitian child a safe home.

Because of you, these kids are thriving, growing, and learning. We hope you’ll continue sharing this page with friends and family and making donations as often as you can.

One last time thank you so much for your generous donations. Take care, and our warmest regards from Haiti.

A Big "Thank you" from Haiti!
A Big "Thank you" from Haiti!

As 2011 draws to a close, we can’t believe all that you’ve helped us achieve. With your support, we’ve been able to provide food, healthcare, safe housing, and enriching activities for all of the children at the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage. In fact, your generosity has been so extraordinary that we’ve been able to raise our fundraising goal – again!

Since our ThanksGiving update on November 14th, 282 donors took action to ensure that the kids would have a happy holiday season. Together, those donors have given an incredible $12,483. Thank you so much!

A large portion of these donors have been Eli Lilly employees donating on Gift Cards. We’d like to extend a special thank you to Eli Lilly for their inspiring support of these kids.

As we approach Christmas, we hope you’ll encourage friends and family to follow in your footsteps by sharing this page and encouraging them to make a tax deductible donation.

One last time, we’d like to extend our sincerest thanks to you for your generosity over the past year. Merry Christmas, and we hope you have the happiest of New Years.
