As the Holiday season begins, we can’t believe the difference you’ve made in the lives of the children living at the Hands Together To Defend the Children Orphanage.

Some of you were in Haiti when we first started working with the kids. They were living in tents that flooded nightly, suffered from intestinal parasites, didn’t attend school, and faced a daily struggle to survive.

Today, when you arrive at the orphanage, you’re greeted by classes taking place at the orphanage’s free new school, a tidy property which is safe for the kids, and happy children asking (in English!) “What’s your name?”  They’ve learned art, new languages, and how to stay healthy. And none of it would have been possible without you.

As Americans across the country get ready to gather their families and give thanks, we hope that you’ll take a little extra joy in the knowledge that your donations have given 47 children a reason to be thankful.

This Holdiay season, we hope you’ll consider giving a holiday gift to the children at the orphanage. Giving your gift is easy – just go to our GlobalGiving project page and look under the large “donate” button on the project page to find the “gift” option. The project which receives the most gifts this holiday season will receive extra funding from GlobalGiving.

Thanks so much for all you’ve already given, and Happy ThanksGiving from Haiti!

In School at HTDC! Thanks to ALM Photography

School is back in session at the Hands Together to Defend the Children (HTDC) Orphanage, and the kids couldn’t be happier!

This time last year, they had only just moved into their new home. Now, thanks to you, the kids are comfortable and focusing on getting the education they’ll need to secure a future free of poverty and instability.

With basic necessities secure, the orphanage directors are taking on the long-term challenges they still face. The children will need vocational skills, a sustainable income, and we’d love to see a new, permanent orphanage built to replace this rented house. The children and directors have a great deal of work remaining, but today, more than a year after you turned things around for the kids at the HTDC orphanage, there is a real sense of good things to come. Challenges are faced with enthusiasm and hope.

Your donations provide that hope, and we’d like to extend a warm thank you.

Supporting these lovely kids recently got a little easier. You can now donate $10 to the HTDC orphanage just be sending a text.

Simply text “Give 6235” to 80088 and reply with a “yes” to the confirmation text you’ll receive. Text Giving is a great, hassle free way to give yourself, and makes it easy to encourage friends and family to give.

If you have any questions or concerns about Text Giving, or any other part of this project, please don’t hesitate to email Media@EDVolunteers.org.

One last time, thanks for your donation, and our warmest regards from Haiti.

We’re delighted to report that a recent exhibition of the children’s art at our partner, REBUILD Globally’s, workshop was a complete success!

The day was made extra special by a song sung by the artists and visits from UN personnel who have offered to host other art sales and exhibitions on their bases. None of these exciting developments would be possible without your support.

On-going health checks and English classes mean that the kids at HTDC continue to grow and develop. It’s great to visit the orphanage, be greeted in English, and know that these vulnerable children are receiving so much more than just a simple primary school education.

Thanks to you, we’re able to provide skills that will give the kids a leg up to better jobs and more options in the future.

We recently asked the director of the orphanage to write about his experience with EDV, and there’s one particular sentence that sums up what you’ve done for these vulnerable kids.

A big thank you to everyone that has given EDV financial support…Without you we would never have been so far and you proved to us that there is always hope even after the darkest moment.

One last time, thanks so much for your support of the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage.

Hello all,

We hope this finds you well?

For this update we’d like to start with a special thank you to the more than 96 Eli Lilly and Company employees who have donated more than $4,150 to support the children at the orphanage. Without your generosity, these kids would be without a home, school, or the art and English classes they so enjoy. Thanks so much!

The children’s much-loved art class, which you’ve so generously supported, will soon reach its most exciting point - an art exhibition. Our partners, REBUILD Globally, have generously donated their workshop for the exhibition which has now has been scheduled for August 27th.

This is not only a great opportunity for the kids to feel a sense of pride in their work, but we’re very hopeful that the sale of the art will provide much needed income for the orphanage. If all goes well, this could be the first of many exhibitions, and it’s all thanks to your generous contributions.

As the orphanage grows and develops, we hope you’ll continue to provide funding for safe housing, enriching activities, and the health care that brings such joy to the lives of these vulnerable children.

Until August 17th, showing your support for the kids at the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage is even easier than usual. In fact, it’s as easy as logging into Facebook.

One of our photos has been selected as a finalist in Global Giving’s photo contest. The winning photo will be the one which receives the most votes on Facebook and will receive $1,000, so please vote today! Here’s how:

  1. Login to Facebook and then "Like" the GlobalGiving page. You can find that page here.
  2. "Like" our photo which you can find here
  3. Finally, tell all your friends on Facebook how easy it is to help a great charity win $1,000! Make sure they understand that to vote, they must first "Like" the GlobalGiving page or their votes won't count.

If you’re not on Facebook, you can still share this information with friends and family or just make a donation.  Thank you so much for all you’ve already done for the kids at the orphanage, and our warmest regards.

Hello all,

I hope this finds you well!

Our work with the kids at the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage continues to grow and expand to include new enriching activities. In fact, your generosity means that we’ve once again been able to raise our fundraising goal for the children of the orphanage. These extra funds allow each child to access new opportunities ranging from English classes to art to extra help in school – and it’s all thanks to you!

The kids recently started working on recycled art. Using found materials and trash to create art teaches the children about the importance of caring for their environment. In Haiti, failing to recycle has very real consequences. Drainage canals clogged with trash lead to cholera and burning trash leads to respiratory infections.

But when we started talking about recycled art, the kids didn’t quite seem to be getting the concept, so we arranged a little outing to help them understand that recycled art was beautiful too!

The kids’ art teacher and several volunteers from our organisation took the children in the art programme to a nearby museum which was hosting an exhibit of Haitian artists’ use of recycled material in art.

Most of these kids had never been to a museum before and they absolutely loved the trip! With their imaginations triggered by the work of other artists, we can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with in their upcoming classes.

None of these exciting field trips or classes would be possible without your generosity. We hope you’ll be willing to continue to support the kids by spreading the word about Global Giving’s Matching Day – it’s coming right up on June 15th!

Global Giving will be matching all donations of up to $1,000 by 30%, and the organsiation which raises the most will win an extra bonus. Please get involved if you can by spreading the word or making a donation.

One last time, thanks again for all you’ve already given to these vulnerable kids. Your donation truly has been life changing for the children at the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage.

One last time, thanks so much,
