Hello all!

The fact that more than 130 individuals have given in support the kids at Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage is simply extraordinary. We are honoured and humbled by your generosity.

With your help, we have rented a safe, secure house for two full years where all the kids can live. These children have lost parents, seen their houses destroyed, and were forced to live in two dirty, overcrowded tents for more than six months after the earthquake. They will not soon forget what you have given.

To celebrate your generous contribution and the new house, we recently held an art day. At the orphanage directors’ request, we distributed thank you signs which each child coloured. We hope that these sincere thank-yous convey what a difference you have made in the lives of some of Haiti’s most vulnerable children.

While this housing appeal is funded, we are still raising money to provide the children with school fees and money to pay for much needed vitamins and medical fees. If you are still inspired to give, or know someone who might be, please let them know about this page. We'll soon be revising this page to reflect our new fundraising goals.

Together we can make sure that these children not only have safe housing, but can access education and the medications they desperately need.

Again, thanks so much for your support. From all of us here in Haiti we wish you the happiest of holidays.

Working hard to clear and clean the land
Working hard to clear and clean the land

Since our last update we've negotiated rent on a house and we’re very excited to announce that we’re now fixing up the property in anticipation of the orphanage’s big move! International and Haitian volunteers are currently working together to clear and clean the land and paint the house.

We wanted to take this opportunity to send you a message written by Loranzo Carlo – one of the staff members of the orphanage. He has been living with the children since the earthquake when the house where the orphanage used to be housed was destroyed forcing the children and staff to move into tents. No one better understands what your contribution has meant.

"Living with the kids under the tents during many months wasn’t easy for us especially when it was raining or very hot.

Because of these difficult conditions it was a humanitarian act to help us move from tents to a much more comfortable house and I want to say thanks for the way you’ve taken notice of the situation and contributed for the kids who are so vulnerable.

We are very grateful that you gave your support and the kids were very happy that they have experienced such unforgettable act which will stay in their memory. A big thanks to the EDV staff who were the witness of the situation of the kids and who felt concern and took the initiative to raise money to assure a better tomorrow for the Haitian kids.

The orphanage staff and the kids join together in one voice want to say thanks to all of you and reclaim GOD’S blessing upon each person who contributed to make this happen.

Thank you and Sincerely Yours,

Loranzo Carlo"

We're still raising funds for school fees and to outfit the house, so please help us keep the momentum going by letting friends and family know about our work in Haiti.

In the coming weeks and months as the kids move into their new house we’re looking forward to updating you on how they’re settling in. In the meantime, we just wanted to write and say thanks, again, from all of us here in Haiti.

Warm regards – and we hope all of our American donors had a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello all,

We hope you’re all well! We’re excited to write you with big news.

Following a donation of $3,000 from one of our US-based partners, Burners Without Borders (BWB) we can now say with assurance that we’ll be able to rent a safe house for all 47 children living at the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage for two years!

We echo the emotions of the staff and kids living at the orphanage when we say we are awed and humbled by your support. The children who your donations will house have spent much of their young lives in dirty, unsafe shelter under threat of eviction. Your donations will provide these children with secure housing for the first time in their lives.

Success in this fundraising effort would not have been possible without the help of all who donated. So thank you all for your contributions.

We hope that this won’t be the end of your extraordinary support of the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage. With housing secure, we’re turning our attention to making sure that the children have tables to sit at when they eat, beds to sleep in, can afford to see a doctor when they’re ill, and have their school fees covered.

So while further donations won’t go specifically to housing, they will still be used to change the lives of these children.

We hope you’ll help us reach this goal of going beyond housing by telling your friends and family about Global Giving’s “Give more Get More Day”. On 12th October, Global Giving is matching all donations made on their site and waiving their 15% administrative fee. Donations will be matched on a sliding scale, so donations between $10 and $499 will be matched by 30%, donations between $500 and $999 will be matched by 40%, and contributions between $1,000 and $2,500 will be matched by 50%.

Again, thanks so much for your generosity. Your donations have changed the lives of these deserving kids. We're looking forward to sending you photos and updates as these kids settled into their new house!

If you have any further questions, ideas, or concerns feel free to email me at Media@EDVolunteers.org.
