It’s been three weeks since Tropical Storm Isaac destroyed the classrooms at the HTDC orphanage. Combined with an anonymous donation from a UK company, you’ve already given almost $1,300 to rebuild the classrooms. This is a fantastic response – thanks so much to everyone who’s given!
Tomorrow, two of EDV's directors will travel to Haiti to plan the reconstruction of the classrooms and discuss the coming two years with the orphanage directors. Your donations since the storm have been fantastic, but we’re still seeking funds to pay for the construction of new classrooms and cover the orphanage’s rent for the next two years.
Your donations will support children like Gusline. Gusline is three. She was brought to the orphanage by a friend who found her alone. We don’t know anything about her past, and her parents are thought to have died in the earthquake.
The orphanage directors are now her legal guardians, and they hope to one day find out more about her parents and the early years of her life. You can meet more of the children Gusline lives with here.
Gusline and all her friends rely on your generosity to ensure that they have a safe home, food, and health care when she needs it. You’ve changed her life, and we can’t tell you how much your donation has been appreciated. Now we’re asking you to be generous one more time.
We hope you’ll give today and share this update to help us rebuild the school and secure another two years of safe housing for the HTDC orphanage.
Thanks so much, and take care!

“I was scared [the storm] would come and break everything. We were prepared, but the big winds can break so many things – like the school...”
- Titi, 14
Thanks to you, Titi and the rest of the kids at the orphanage weathered Tropical Storm Isaac safely in a home which even “the big winds” couldn’t break. But the storm destroyed his classroom, and without a place to go to school, his future is once again insecure.
Isaac was a blow to the orphanage but it was certainly not a crippling one, and the children aren’t facing it alone. They have you on their side.
The classrooms Isaac destroyed were tents which were only intended to act as transitional structures. We plan to build back with classrooms that will withstand any storm Haiti can throw at them.
The storm also destroyed the orphanage’s transformer, leaving the orphanage without power. Together, repairs to the transformer and school will cost $6,354.
We also need to pay rent on the orphanage’s house to ensure another two years of safe housing. We have some funds in reserve for the rent, but we still need to raise an additional $10,000. That means we’re aiming to raise a total of $16,354.
We know that these are big numbers, but we also know that the kids have more than 1,000 incredible supporters like you right here on GlobalGiving. Together, we can reach our goal of safe housing and a quality education for all of the children at the HTDC orphanage. Please donate today.
You can also help out by activating your network for the kids at the HTDC orphanage. Circulate this email at your office, hold a fundraising event, or simply share this update on social media to let your friends and family know that the children at the HTDC orphanage.
You can also let them know that their funds will be in safe hands – EDV directors Andy Chaggar and Emma Taylor will be traveling to Haiti from September 22nd to September 29th. They’ll use their time in Haiti to plan and monitor the vital repair work.
If you have questions please don’t hesitate to contact Media@EDVolunteers.org.
On Friday August 24th, Tropical Storm Isaac slammed into Haiti, bringing 60mph winds and torrential rain. Isaac flooded many parts of Port au Prince, flattened countless tents, affected 14,000 families, and killed at least four people.
Thanks to you, the orphanage weathered the storm in a safe, concrete house and everyone is safe, but they didn’t escape unscathed. The storm destroyed the orphanage’s school.
Communications with Haiti are still difficult, so we don’t yet have pictures or details for you. In the coming days we’ll gather information about the damage and what we’ll need to rebuild. As we learn more we’ll let you know.
Together, we can rebuild the orphanage school better than it was before. We hope that you’ll donate today or share this page with friends and family to let them know that while Isaac hit Haiti hard, we’re ready to rebuild.
Thanks so much for all you’ve given, and we’ll update you again soon.

First of all, thanks so much to everyone who gave on June 13th and had their donations matched by 50%! It’s thanks to donors like you that the kids continue to thrive.
Summer has started off with a celebration of children’s day in Haiti where the kids showcased their recycled art. We asked the directors of the orphanage why they chose to focus on recycled art.
We decided to use recycled items because we believe that you can turn something ugly into something beautiful [and because] pollution is such a big problem in Haiti. Getting the kids to use the items we find in the street gives them a direct contact with their environment [and teaches them] how to change an item that is lost and ugly into something beautiful.
We love the sentiment, and are so glad that the orphanage directors are teaching the children in their care such valuable lessons.
The kids enjoyed their day, and we’re so proud of all they achieved. Their enjoyment is a direct result of your generosity not just on June 13th, but over the past year. Your donations are changing these children’s lives, and we can hardly express how much the staff at EDV and the kids at the orphanage appreciate your donations.
Thanks so much for all you give.

On Wednesday, June 13th, GlobalGiving will be matching all donations by 50%! This is a fantastic opportunity to ensure that the kids continue to thrive through the summer and beyond.
Your donations are essential to ensuring that the kids at the HTDC orphanage stay in school, eat nutritious food, and have a safe place to live. Without you, the children would still be in tents.
We hope that on Wednesday you’ll continue your inspiring support of the orphanage by making a donation. Even small donations help us secure a bright future for these vulnerable children.
If you don’t feel that you can donate, you can still help out by spreading the word about this fantastic matching opportunity by emailing friends and family or sharing information about the matching day on Facebook.
Thanks so much for all you’ve already done to support the kids at the Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage, and our warmest regards.
