Food for thought!
By shayle havemann | Project leader
Introduction
Unfortunately, because of poor infrastructure and many people living in informal/ rural settlements, water distribution is also incredibly unequal which further adds to inequality and is harmful to people who rely on agriculture for an income and to provide for their communities.
Report
Innovative agricultural solutions use integrated organic farming systems that combine vermiculture, aquaponics and small livestock to provide higher yield with fewer resources. The system only needs 10% of the water normally used for gardening, making it possible to farm even during extreme drought. By developing this system at schools, teachers get the opportunity to use it as practical teaching material, feed their students or sell the crop produced to generate income and be self-sufficient. We have managed to install to full systems in 2 communities in Africa. One full system costs $2500.

You put 17,100 meals on the table last quarter!
By Nita and Tyler | The South Africa Guru's
Dear Friends and Family of South Africa,
We are so lucky to have you on our side as without you we simply could not provide these meals to our children in need. Although it is such a special project we really are stuck in a catch 22 as each week/month we scrape around for enough cash to buy food. It certainly got tough and a few days we had to make sandwiches only as we didn't have enough cash to buy anything more substantial.
We are so committed and our 4 local cooks are all volunteers and are cooking for the love of their community so this project is all about food costs and gas to cook - it is that simple! However as we battle to buy the food we are looking to the future and the long term sustainable plan and this is what really needs huge investment and a kick start.
We want to have 5 large veggies gardens across 5 communties and then we want 5 chicken farms that are producing eggs and meat and with all these produce being sustainability available we are confident this project will continue without your funding. We already have 1 aquaponics and 1 veggie garden at a school so we have made a start but have a long way to go, this is because we need to balance the shopping to ensure all children are fed as well as fundraising for the bigger picture so our challenge is more fundraising for the next quarter but to also continue providing daily meals to children living in poverty.
The amazing news is that we managed to cook 17,100 meals over the past 3 months and made sure 280 children were fed daily and didn't go hungry. You made this possible so thank you!
Thanks for your amazing support!

Our local chef has requested a focus on cabbage and carrots is key ingredients needed for the community. So children have been tasked with planting seeds and growing these ingredients in the community gardens. Vermi aquaponics has also been built into the curriculum for the grade 4 class and they have been tasked with setting up their own miniature aquaponics system in the classroom. We need to raise an additional $3000 inorder to employ a groundsman for the year to manage gardens and maintenance a this wonderful little community school.
