Hi everyone,
Winter has properly settled in here in South Africa, and it is cold. But every single day, our children still turn up with a smile on their face, and that alone tells you everything about the spirit of this community.
Some good news to start with. Our breakfast club is making a real difference. Teachers are telling us they are seeing an increase in test results, and they have noticed the children concentrating better in class and behaving better too. That is exactly the kind of proof we needed that a full stomach in the morning changes what happens in the classroom for the rest of the day.
Where we are with food supplies
Back in May, we went shopping and bought enough breakfast food to last three months. We are now coming to the end of that supply, so we need to raise funds to get back to the shops and restock.
Lunch has been the harder story this quarter. Donations have been down, and we still do not have enough monthly donors to guarantee a consistent supply. Because of this, we have had to cut lunch at our primary school to three days a week. At the pre-schools, we are aiming for five days but last week we could only manage four. It is not where we want to be, and we know these children need more than we are currently able to give them.
The bigger picture
We know this puts us back into reactive mode, scrambling to cover the next few weeks rather than planning further ahead. That is not where we want to stay. We are still working toward building a more sustainable model for this project, one that does not leave us waiting to see what comes in before we know what we can put on a plate.
How you can help
GlobalGiving's July Bonus Day is coming up on July 15th. Donations of $100 or more made during the campaign will be matched from GlobalGiving's bonus pool, so this is one of the best times all year to make a larger gift go further. If you have been thinking about a bigger donation, this is the day to make it count.
Every contribution, big or small, helps us get out of reactive mode and back to planning properly for these children. Thank you, as always, for standing with us through the harder months as well as the good ones. These kids are still smiling because of you.
Thank you again for being so amazing! v
