Hello All,
As I kick off this report things have not been great over here! It is winter in South Africa and with the power shortage electricity is cut off for 3-4 hours at a time 2-3 times a day. We don't have heating in our buildings and now we have experienced so much rainfall over the last 3 weeks that we are almost underwater.
The rain has washed thousands of homes away and left people with nothing, the sewers are over flowing and toilets backing up so we have been forced to close the school as the toilets are overflowing, our veggie garden in under water and our aquaponics system is broken as the pump couldn't deal with the overload. It is crazy to think only 3 years ago we were preparing for day zero when we thought we were going to run out of water in Cape Town and now we are under water.
It's been challenging as we can't access our home grown produce and as school has been closed we have had to try and prepare packed lunches for the children to come and collect as without our food these children go hungry. This means our monthly food bill has increased by 250%, we have been getting donations from local schops and support from community members to keep going but we are going to need much more help to get through winter over here as it has only just begun.
We thank everyone that has been getting in touch to help us through volunteering, fundraising and donating food to our project, it's looking like we have a long winter ahead but we will get through it.
Thank you
