Training on agriculture climate change adaptation

By Sopheat Tes | Executive Director of ODOV

Cambodia is hot and dry at this time of the year. The water sources such as natural lakes, canals, or ponds are dried up. The farmers face water shortages for their agriculture production, especially, vegetable project production. The main activities of this reporting period involved assisting the farmers to combat this challenge. ODOV provided training on agriculture adaptation techniques to project participants including soil and water management, crop diversification, and crop rotation. A total of 50 target households (32 women) were in attendance. Participating in this training program makes the farmers more adapted to climate vulnerability.

In addition to providing training, ODOV staff continued conducting field follow-up visits for the project participants to provide mentoring and coaching for them on production activities and raising awareness about gender equality as well. A total, of 50 target households (32 women) who grow vegetables and raise chickens benefit from the extension service provided by ODOV project staff. These households acquired resources knowledge and skills to grow their food for daily consumption and earn extra income from selling the surplus food produced to support their livelihoods.

The information collected from the target households confirmed that within the last four months, the target households produced 18,500kg of vegetables. Out of 3,300 kg consumed by the households and remaining 15,200kg of vegetables were sold and received an income of $7,600. In addition to this, the households also produced 1,030 kg of chicken meats. Out of 450kg were consumed and the 580kg of chickens were sold and received an income of $2,320.

On an average, each households were able to receive $198 additional income from selling vegetables and chickens within the last four months. These households still continue to grow vegetables and raise chickens to improve their livelihoods. On average, each household grow at least five variety of vegetates and raised 14 hens, three rosters, 34 adult chickens and 70 chicks.
