Siobhan Neilland made Mogul’s Top 100 Innovators in Diversity & Inclusion List

The OneMama team is excited to announce that Siobhan Neilland made number nine on
Mogul’s Top 100 Innovators in Diversity & Inclusion list for 2017.

Mogul is the “fasting growing technology platform for women to connect, share information and access knowledge.” Mogul has 165 million views each month and is also UN Women partner.

“Those mentioned have made, and continue to make, enormous strides in hiring a diverse talent, creating welcoming environments and communities for employees and contributing to society in meaningful ways.” – Mogul

Mogul selected Siobhan because of her collective work with OneMama.org and her work building out technology organizations with Amazon (Prime Now) focusing on diversity

Siobhan Neilland founded OneMama.org, a UN Consultative nonprofit that brings maternal care, health and family services, as well as economic sustainability to women and their families in rural African communities where people survive on under $1.25 a day. She is also the lead recruiter for Amazon Prime Now. The Prime Now leadership team started as almost entirely female, and nearly sixty-percent of all Amazon Prime Now’s tech teams are women.

See Top 100 list here : https://onmogul.com/stories/top-100-innovators-in-diversity-inclusion

Siobhan is really excited to utilize her skills for both her tech work as well as giving all women a voice:

“I am so touched to be a part of an amazing list of women who are making a difference in the world and giving a voice to woman on all levels of leadership” – Siobhan said

Siobhan continues to find work life balance as she drives change for woman at OneMama.org and continues to fight for access and empowerment to woman who live under $1.25 a day. The same goes for her Staffing Diversity and Inclusion consulting role at Amazon in the Prime Now team. She currently is moving the needle in hiring woman and giving access and a pathway to leadership roles for woman in technology. She is making an impact with her inclusion and engangement events in both for tune 100’s and the non-profit sectors.

Congratualations, Siobhan!

New Funding Vision Set Forth at Uganda’s OneMama Clinic!

Womens Day in Uganda - OneMama Sponsored
On-the-ground fieldwork is imperative to the success of the OneMama Clinic.

Since founder, Siobhan Neilland, resides full time in California, her yearly trips to Uganda are times of extreme focus. The year-round work we do relies heavily on these five to six weeks when we implement and improve programs, staff training, and do community outreach. This year followed that same rhythm in strides! The OneMama team and Clinic in Uganda are hopeful that by sharing these trip updates, it will help bring forward new partners. Most of all, new partnerships are essential to complete the important work the OneMama clinic does each day.

We love our little OneMama Clinic! …The people, power, and dedication of a community that really does want to transform the way it thrives! First of all, we need to share upfront that donations have not been coming in like they have in the past. Consequently, we suspect that this is due to the political climate in the US. Support and donations used to come in often, however we are now seeing less and less participation from organizations and individuals here. Also, the change in laws in the United States have affected the way we do things in Africa. These changes are worrying our little clinic and Siobhan experienced this first hand during her recent trips to the village.

As the political and fundraising climate was changing, Siobhan realized that as a leader, it is her job to adjust with the times.

“My number one priority is for the OneMama Clinic to survive and keep the doors open and thriving. If former funding paradigms are not working, we need to find new ones. What I’m realizing is, instead of relying so heavily on products that will sell well in the U.S. and International markets, we are going to focus on creating products and crops that will sell in Uganda with the goal to be self-funding in a year in a half.” – Quote by Siobhan

Ugandan OneMama Village

Below are some of the first steps to making this adjustment. A bulleted overview of Siobhan’s recent trips to the village from Siobhan’s perspective:
  • Most noteworthy, we bought new fabrics to make a new OneMama fashion collection featured at New York Fashion Week 2017. The new fabric combines t-shirt materials with military inspired uniform fabric. The creation of classy designs that fits all women’s body shapes. Also, we increased our men’s wear collection and this will also be featured at New York Fashion Week.
  • We met with a lot of political figures in Ugandan parliament, or Chairmen, as they are called in Uganda. We met with the Chairmen (Governor) of Kayunga and he spoke at our Community event of 500-700 people. It was a special time where we served food and presented all the new health and economic programs for the clinic… even the trusted leading aid to the President of Uganda was in attendance!
  • OneMama has a women’s soccer team!

At the Community event we presented the local women’s soccer team that OneMama is a proud sponsor. The team includes members of our Community, as well as, OneMama staff.

  • Taking care of Mama! – One morning Siobhan took mama Jamira to go get her hair done.  “A small gesture to make sure she is taken care of.”  Siobhan tries to share one-on-time with all the wonderful staff at the OneMama Clinic.
  • We introduced multiple new projects to our economic sustainability programs. First of all, the insect project. Insects can help create more protein for the community as well as financial sustainability. Siobhan’s life-partner, who accompanied her on the trip, lovingly headed up this new project. Additionally, we built out or expanded many other projects. These include honey harvesting, herbal and eatable crop production for local sales, providing menstrual pads for sale and use in the community, and creating new, sustainable designs for OneMama Collection necklaces, purses, and clothing. As a result of the political climate, collection items are now created with sales in the local marketplaces in the forefront of efforts.
  • We had countless meetings with the community advisory board, our OneMama staff, potential partners, and the community at large.
  • We built out partner relationships with the people who will be working on our labs, family planning programs, and our domestic violence programs.
  • Our OneMama staff signed on for another year to work at the OneMama clinic, we have a full staff and three nurses.
  • We had the privilege to share with the community how we gained consultative status with the United Nations – giving their village a voice on the world stage of policy change!

Most importantly, our OneMama Clinic cannot stay open without changing the way it operates in the bigger picture. At the same time, we would not be this far without those who share in the OneMama vision. We need these partnerships to continue and are hopeful that these new developments inspire you into greater action!

The Simple Truth: Our clinic and the people who benefit from it rely on the people of the OneMama world village.“We are All OneMama”Are you with us?

I am writing from Uganda, where I've been very busy celebrating and dancing with Mama Jamira and the villagers, meeting with local government officials, and talking with the community about how to sustain and grow our programs. I hope you've seen some of the latest videos on social media of our celebrations and our progress!

I am also writing today because that progress was made possible in part by your generous support of OneMama! Thank you!! Right now, we need your actions of heroism again to connect OneMama with more help. Month to month, I worry that we won't be able to keep the clinic open much longer. Being here now, that reality really sets in. I am only in Uganda for a short amount of time, and this is the best time to make things happen!

Would you please consider being OneMama Global Ambassador? Especially at a challenging time when funding has been cut to many NGOs around the world due to the reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule under the current administration in the White House, we need some extra support from our amazing OneMama family!

What does it mean to be a OneMama Global Ambassador? It's simple: Reach out today to a few friends to find just 3 (or more) people who can pledge just $25 per month to OneMama. That is just less than $1 a day!  Every $2 donated saves a mama and a baby! Below is suggested email text for you to copy and paste to send to your action hero friends and family.

We don't have a lot of time. The action you take now may be what helps keep our clinic doors open for another year and longer, at a time when so many nonprofits are struggling. We have seen so many positive changes in these communities where people live on under $1.25 a day, and we need your help to keep progress moving forward!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart and all OneMama's here and around the globe.

Love & Light,

Hi OneMama Action Heros!

It’s that time again! I am traveling back to the OneMama Clinic in Uganda to develop new programs on the ground. This letter is about that and how YOU can help too!

It's been a year and a half since I joined the team on the grounds in Uganda, and usually when I prepare to leave, I know there will be a lot of problems that I will be arriving to. This year feels different though... Even though it's been a while since I’ve been back, the clinic continues to run really well, and the programs we have already in place are thriving! So for the first time as I prepare to leave, I am not mostly worried about the village, I am worried about the funds coming in to keep the clinic open. With all the worldly and political changes right now, it has severely hurt OneMama's incoming donations and funding this year. This is why I want so badly for the clinic and the people of the OneMama village to be fully self-sustainable. This way, when things do change politically, they can still survive and prosper. This is the mission of this summer's trip to Uganda.

The OneMama Model and community has become more and more entrepreneurial in nature over the years creating funding solutions through agriculture, the selling of products, and training, to bring money back into the village - and it is ready to take its next step with a heavier focus on agriculture, the OneMama Collection, and more training opportunities to help reach our goal of being 100% self-sustaining!

Here is the plan for this year's trip to Uganda:

  • Investing in beekeeping and insect harvesting for protein cricket, meal worms, and termites. Did you know cricket flour has 3 times more protein then steak!? This will bring much needed protein to the mothers and babies of the OneMama village.
  • Finding more creative ways to resource our materials for the OneMama Collection, such as finding fabrics of more recycled materials and standardizing our designs.
  • Further development on programs already operating, including the Domestic Violence Program.
  • Nurturing new and established relationships in Uganda and the United Nations.
  • Building out local fundraising opportunities from the Ugandan government and foundations for financial support. This will be our first year doing this because we are just now qualifying for the certain criteria needed to pursue these routes.

So this month, me and my twelve bags of supplies filled with donations, feminine hygiene products for the women of the village, and materials needed for the making of these new programs will be on the ground in Uganda.

If any of the program for this trip stand out to you, such as sponsoring a beehive, or you just want to help the OneMama Clinic, reach to the OneMama team  and we can help you make that happen!

Please visit OneMama.org and make a donation today, if you are inspired by the help and support OneMama brings to all Mamas and Babies. We can't continue without you!

Thanks to each of you who continually stand up and become the action hero that is needed to keep OneMama alive. Thank YOU!

Love n' Light,

Siobhan

OneMama’s Journey Towards Sculpting Policy at the United Nations

OneMama Gets Consultative Status
OneMama Opening Doors to Advocate for Women in a Whole New Way!

Siobhan Neiland, OneMama.org founder, along with a couple handfuls of volunteers, traveled to New York City in March. They gathered for the third year in a row to present at the United Nations as a delegate at the Commission on the Status of Women CSW61.

This two-week event came with challenges, beginning with a snowstorm that shut down the city the day before the event, but it also came with time to nurture partnerships and make new ones. Along with sharing about our village and leading a panel that discussed Global Funding Solutions, the OneMama.org team also embarked on a new way to make change!

OneMama is thrilled to share that we have begun the process of applying for Consultative Status!
With this we can better advocate for the women of our village and support voices around the world in a whole new way.

Consultative Status will get us to the policy table and help us fight for real action. We met influential people while at the UN who will be partnering and advocating for us to make this process towards consultative status as smooth as possible.

In case you don’t know, the Commission on the Status of Women allows for NGO representatives, international delegates, and nation states to share their opinions and sculpt policy at the United Nations. We’ve loved sharing as a delegate voice for our NGO for the past few years, but we are ready to make that jump, to not only talk about what we do and how we succeed as a NGO, but also be among the people who make the official policy changes. How cool is this?!

When we talk about advocating for women in a whole new way this is what we believe will make those things happen.

We are looking forward to our new partnerships and the things that will birth over the next year, but we also celebrate all that happened while at the CSW61.

Thank you for supporting and cheering us on as we face each new stage in this process!
