Youth-Friendly Counseling and Referral Sessions provide a confidential and supportive environment where teenagers and young people can seek reliable information, discuss concerns, and receive appropriate guidance on sexual and reproductive health. The activity recognizes that young people may sometimes hesitate to approach adults or traditional health services because of fear, stigma, embarrassment, or concerns about being judged.
Through trained mentors and appropriate health professionals, participants are encouraged to discuss questions and concerns relating to puberty, relationships, sexual and reproductive health, HIV and sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy prevention, menstrual health, emotional well-being, and other age-appropriate issues. Information is provided respectfully and in a manner that encourages informed and responsible decision-making.
An important component of the activity is referral. Mentors are not expected to replace professional healthcare providers. Instead, when a young person requires specialized assistance, the program helps connect them with appropriate qualified health workers and youth-friendly services. Depending on the individual need, referrals may include health education, HIV/STI services, counseling, psychosocial support, or other appropriate healthcare.
The sessions also help young people understand where they can obtain trustworthy health information and how to seek assistance when they face challenges. Confidentiality, safeguarding, respect, and non-discrimination are emphasized throughout the activity.
The program gives particular attention to vulnerable youth who may face barriers to accessing information and services. By bringing mentorship, information, and appropriate referral pathways closer to young people, the activity strengthens their ability to seek help early and make informed choices.
For donors, supporting youth-friendly counseling and referral services helps build a stronger protective network around adolescents. It ensures that young people are not left to navigate sensitive health challenges alone and that those requiring professional assistance can be connected to appropriate services. Ultimately, the activity promotes informed choices, dignity, confidence, and healthier futures for young people.
