The 2013 school year is off to a fantastic start and EIM now has more than 160 students. We’re delighted to welcome this year’s newest teacher, Richardson, and this year’s trainee teacher, Jean Pierre Enock (or “Nocky” for short!).
Thanks to your generosity, 160 students are learning the skills they’ll need to find work. Merci Canine is joining the school this year and will be a part of Wilkens’ beginner class. She was crystal clear on how she thought English would change her life. “English can help me … find a job to take care myself and my family.”

We can’t believe it’s already the week before Christmas. If you haven't finished your shopping, there’s still plenty of time to find the perfect last minute gift while supporting students like Jean Louis Antoine.
Antoine was in secondary school when the earthquake struck. He was trying to help others amid the debris, when he was struck by falling rubble and injured himself. After recovering from his injuries, Antoine was able to complete his secondary school, but like so many of our students, he found that his education wasn’t enough to find work.
So, he joined EIM so that he could learn a skill which would qualify him for a multitude of jobs. He told our volunteers, “English is commercial language, you see through Haiti the people speaking English often find the greatest jobs.”

Last Sunday, the English in Mind Institute offered placement exams for anyone interested in joining the school. The response was enormous. 272 individuals arrived hoping for a spot in the English school. The response was so massive we had to split the placement exam into two sittings.
Next week, existing students will sit their end of year exams and we’ll be there to see how it all goes and help out. After their exams, we’ll be working with the school administrator and teachers to decide how many new students we can accept of the 272 who sat the placement exam.
But that decision won’t just be up to us – it will be up to you too.
How many new classes we can offer is completely dependent on funding. It costs just $1,200 to employ a teacher for the year - $1,200 to welcome dozens of new students and give a hard working volunteer teacher a job.
If you can, please give today and help us welcome as many of the 272 students who took our placement exam as possible. If you can’t give, you can still help out by sharing this update and letting friends and family know how they can help Haitians change their lives for the better.

As the students prepare for their September exams, the English in Mind Institute is enjoying steady, sustained growth. Thanks to you, more than 140 students have been attending class and developing the skills they need to build a better tomorrow. Even more astoundingly, there are more than 450 individuals on our waiting list.
The school’s growth has been powered by the inspiring teachers who were running classes long before EDV’s volunteers arrived in Haiti. Their vision and energy drives the school, so we were delighted when the English in Mind Institute decided to launch its very own Facebook page.
Not all of our teachers are paid. Richardson has been working as a volunteer substitute teacher for months. While we’re inspired by his generosity, we’re also aware that he still lives in a tent, and that he’s more than qualified to teach a class of students.
We’re hoping to hire Richardson so that we can welcome more students from the waiting list and help Richardson into safe housing. Even if you can’t donate today to help us give Richardson his own class, you can share this page and let others know how easy it is to change lives in Haiti.
As the school’s independence grows and the Haitian teachers take full ownership of their classes, we’re delighted by the students’ success. That success has only been possible because of you.
