Empowering Girls Through Sewing Skills

Our project, Empowering Girls Through Sewing Skills, is being implemented in Namakwa Village, Nakisunga Subcounty, Mukono District, Uganda, to equip vulnerable and disadvantaged girls with practical sewing and tailoring skills that can help them build sustainable livelihoods and become economically independent.

We currently have 156 girls who are intended to benefit from the project. We already have 10 sewing machines available for the training, which has given us a strong starting point. However, the number of machines is not sufficient for all the girls to participate effectively in practical training. We therefore plan to purchase additional new sewing machines so that more girls can practice at the same time and eventually ensure that every girl has adequate access to a machine during training.

The girls will receive practical training in sewing and tailoring, including how to operate and maintain sewing machines, make different garments and other useful products, and develop skills that can be used to earn an income. Alongside sewing skills, we also intend to provide basic entrepreneurship and business skills to help the girls understand how they can turn their skills into sustainable income-generating opportunities.

This project is important because many girls in our community have limited access to vocational training and opportunities to develop skills that can lead to employment or self-employment. By providing sewing machines and practical training, we hope to give these girls more than just a short-term opportunity. We want to equip them with a skill they can continue using to support themselves and their families in the future.

Our immediate priority is to increase the number of sewing machines available for the 156 girls so that the training can be more effective and inclusive. As the project progresses, we will share updates on the girls' training, the products they make, and the ways in which the skills they acquire begin creating opportunities for income and greater independence.

We are grateful to everyone who supports this initiative. With additional sewing machines and continued support, we believe these 156 girls can gain valuable vocational skills, increased confidence, and a pathway toward a more secure and self-reliant future.
