Girls club engaged counsellor on Living a positive

By Abdulai Suale | Senior Programme Officer

Dear cherished donor,

It is yet anothor exciting moment as we bring you updates on our amazing work that is possible with your support. This period has been very exciting as Songtaba through our girls empowerment program used this years mensural hygeine week celebration to organise empowerment seminars to sensitize the girls on mensural hygeine and other career ehancement topics.

The Nanumba girls club members especially Junior and Senior High School graduates engaged counsellor at their communities/ school on the theme‘Living a positive life after Basic and secondary education’.

Hon. Zina, Gender Desk Officer and a former Presiding Member of Nanumba North municipal Assembly had a healthy and interesting discussion with 608 JHS/SHS graduates in Nanumba. She explained to live a positive life as a graduate or girl student, one should be able to identify or know yourself by asking 3 basic questions;

  1. Who am I?
  2. Where am I coming from?
  3. Where am I going?

The 3 basic principles can be a guide to the young ladies to choose the rightful friends, make the right choices and decision and then prevent them from copying life / character of others blindly.

She added, a young girl who wants to be successful in life should be discipline, set an achievable goal and then remain focus till the set goal is achieved

On seeking greener pastures elsewhere like ‘Kayaaye’ and travelling to Saudi Arabia for labourer work, she said these are not good option and should be the least to be thought about by a young girl. She lamented the kind of maltreatment, sexual harassment/abuse, and many other social vices that young people go through in seeking greener pastures outside their home countries at these age. These sometimes leads to unwanted pregnancy, criminal/unsafe abortion, death, theft and many others.

She therefore called on Songtaba and their partners to continue providing counseling’s session, skills training and career guidance to these young girls regularly. Young girls always develop the habit of patience and not to be in hurry. ‘No hurry in life’. They are equally expected to develop the habit of saving and also help their parents, because devil finds works in the idleness hence they should engage themselves in a productive business and other works.

She concluded on the need to be assertive and report any unhealthy advances by the opposite sex to the right quarters for redress, she tasked the girls to be bold, choose role good models and consult their teacher – mentors anytime they have problem.

The girls were excited for tapping in to the rich experience of the role models and pleaded to songgtaba and partners to equally educate their parents on girl’s rights to decision making especially choosing career/Profession. Some parents force their children into professions against their interest, which disturb them in future. And their male counterparts should be targeted on the need to promote girls education, since they are mostly the perpetrators of these crimes.
