3,347 Women: Can you Help?

All women and children deserve healthcare

This year we are pleased to announce our adoption of eight new villages in Darfur: Bargo, Derma, Abu Sinait A nnd Abu Sinait B, Um Isheira, Um Ajaja, Um Shijir, and Turra. Currently, in all eight villages combined, there are 3,347 women living without access to basic everyday healthcare, let alone healthcare for them whilst pregnant, and for their children once born. Virtually none of the mothers can read or write.

We are going to train two women as midwives from each of these eight new villages. That is 16 midwives. Please can you help?

Take a moment to consider what your life - your mother, your wife, your sister's lives - would have been like whilst they were pregnant for nine months with no help at all. Imagine not being able to go for a check-up, to make sure your child was healthy, and so were you. And imagine if when the child was born, there was no one there to help - no equipment and no one who knew anything about delivering a baby safely.

Mothers in Darfur are giving birth in circumstances even more unimaginable every day, to children who honestly may not survive. But it doesn't have to be this way. $3,050 trains one woman as a midwife in Darfur, provides her with a medical kit, and a wealth of knowledge to help her sisters, neighbours, and friends deliver their babies safely. Every small donation builds up to another midwife that can be trained, and hundreds of lives saved. Please consider making a monthly donation of even $10/£10 towards this project. If we all do this, we will raise enough for a midwife in no time.

Munira Graduates Second in her Class!

Munira Graduates Second in her Class!

We are completely blown away by the exam results of our new Kids for Kids midwives! As you remember in our last project report we explained how exams had just begun for the midwives studying in Khartoum. Well now they are all officially qualified and have returned to their villages in Darfur to start saving lives.

These fantastic women scored some of the best results of their whole graduating class. Kids for Kids midwife, Munira from Fardal village scored the second highest result of the whole class! Tyba from Um Judoul scored the third highest result, and Salma from Geleidat Villages scored the 4th highest results. Kids for Kids midwives also held the 5th, 7th and 8th places! What a huge representation that just goes to show how intelligent our volunteer midwives are, how willing and able to learn, study hard, and achieve great things. It is especially impressive to think that most girls do not finish their education, and school in Darfur is as basic as it could be. Many have no chairs or desks or teaching aids - just a blackboard for the teacher.

Our Project Leader, Hassan, had a chance to speak to Munira at the celebration we through for midwives in El Fasher who had just graduated on December 10th. Munira said "I was very afraid when I first went to Khartoum where we were all taught at the Midwife Training School there. It is so different from our village, and so far away. We had to fly there!" Up until that journey Munira and her friends had only ever travelled on a donkey. There are few roads in Darfur.

The most amazing thing is that these women wil return to Darfur where they will help deliver the babies of their neighbours and friends, thereby ensuring their loved ones are kept safe in their homes where there is so little access to health care for pregnant women.

More Midwives Take on their Final Exams!

Amazing news for you all - our midwives training in El Fasher have just started their final exams and by the end of November will become qualified village midwives! They will graduate by the end of the month. All our fantastic supporters have made it possible for us to train another 37 midwives that will return to their villages in Darfur and provide life-saving services to mothers and babies. Rural villages have no health care and hospital is miles away - there are no roads, so you have to ride on a donkey to get there if there are any birth complications. At best hospitals are basic - many have no anaesthesia - and everything has to be paid for, which is often impossible for a mother living in a village. Our midwives are trained in pre and post-natal care, and they help women to give birth safely. We are wishing them all luck for their final exams! Please send your positive and well wishing thoughts to our midwives. Just think how many lives they will be saving so soon!

Things we had not expected as additional bonus for these wonderful volunteers: women who are midwives have a qualification, a means to earn an income, and a much higher status in their villages. You have helped them to achieve this. You have changed their lives for good and all the women and babies they will be helping.

With the holiday season right around the corner, this is the perfect time to donate to help us train more midwives to save more lives in Darfur! If only every village in Darfur could have a skilled midwife to help them, what a difference it could make. Can you help us train another midwife this year? Every donation enables us to do more! In 2019 we will be adopting five new villages and training 10 volunteers as midwives - 2 in each village - but we need your help!
