YOUNG VISIONARY LEADERS REPORT ON WATER, SANITION AND HYGIENE PROJECT AT YOUTH FOR CHANGE EDUCATIONAL CENTER KUMASI IN THE ASHANTI REGION OF GHANA
OVERVIEW
The "Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana" initiative, spearheaded by the Young Visionary Leaders, is a fundraising effort aimed at providing clean drinking water to underprivileged areas in Ghana. This project focuses on constructing and donating mechanized boreholes to marginalized communities in the Northern, Eastern, and Western regions of Ghana. By doing so, it aims to supply clean drinking water to 900,000 individuals, including children, women, and people with disabilities who currently lack access to this necessity.
These communities face numerous challenges, such as inadequate healthcare facilities and economic hardships. Access to clean and affordable water is their primary infrastructural need, as it is a fundamental factor contributing to other significant issues like poverty, gender inequality, and education and health problems. Addressing the water crisis can therefore have a profound impact on improving overall living conditions and tackling the root causes of these broader issues.
INTERVENTION
As part of our "Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana" initiative, led by Young Visionary Leaders Ghana (YVLG), we are raising funds to provide access to clean drinking water in underserved areas across Ghana. YVLG, together with LoveSpring its sponsors and donors, is currently constructing a water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facility for the Youth for Change Educational Center and the Asuofua community in the Ashanti Region. This mechanized water project will supply clean water to both the school and the surrounding community. Additionally, the project includes the construction of a washroom and a handwashing station to promote better hygiene practices among the school children.
BENEFICIARY
Over 400 school children from the Youth for Change Educational Center will benefit directly from this project. Additionally, more than 1,300 community members, including children, youth, women, the elderly, and people with disabilities, will gain access to clean water and improved sanitation once the project is completed and commissioned at the end of September.
CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES
As we strive to ensure that 900,000 of our target beneficiaries have access to clean water, we are actively continuing our fundraising campaign for the "Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana" initiative through our social media platforms. We also participated in the recently concluded GlobalGiving Little By Little donation matching campaign, held from April 8th to April 12th and other recent fundraising efforts tailored to improve our organizational fundraising capacity. We are leveraging Giving Tuesdays to raise awareness about the project through our various social media platforms. We continue to identify communities and schools in urgent need of clean water. Our goal is to provide these areas with clean drinking water as soon as we secure the necessary funding. This objective aligns with our mission to ensure that 100 communities receive access to clean water.
IMPACT STORIES
Amina, a 10-year-old student at the Youth for Change Educational Center, used to walk long distances each day just to fetch water for her family. Often, the water she brought home wasn’t clean, leading to frequent illnesses for her and her siblings. This also meant missing school days, affecting her education.
Now, thanks to the mechanized water project at her school yet to be commissioned, Amina would no longer has to worry about finding clean water. She can focus on her studies, and her family enjoys safe drinking water right in their community. The new washroom and handwashing facilities at her school would also ensure that she and her friends can maintain good hygiene, helping to keep them healthy and in school.
Amina’s story is just one of many, as over 400 students and 1,300 community members now have access to clean water, improving their health and daily lives.
CHALLENGES
The Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana initiative aims to raise $1 million to provide clean drinking water to these communities and schools. However, to date, we have raised a total of $695 from five one-time individual donors. Despite our efforts in the recent Little by Little matching campaign and other fundraising activities, we have not yet been able to secure adequate funds for our cause.
ACTIONABLE MEASURES
The Young Visionary Leaders Ghana team is actively implementing strategies to ensure the success of our fundraising campaign for the "Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana" project. Our social media team champions this cause weekly, working to expand our donor base and increase contributions. By leveraging global initiatives such as the GlobalGiving "Little by Little" campaign and Giving Tuesday, along with support from partners and international schools, we are confident that these efforts will lead to significant progress in the near future.
CONCLUSION
We sincerely acknowledge the tremendous support of our corporate and individual donors on this journey. Your generosity has been instrumental in our achievements, and we are deeply grateful for your unwavering kindness and commitment to our cause. This success would not have been possible without you.
