Periodic Quarterly Update Report

By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenya

The COVID pandemic has continued to ravage Kenya.  Much of the country, including the Transmara region where we work, remains under lockdown.  Kenya does not have sufficient COVID vaccines or rapid testing kits. Although this has severely constricted our activities, we have continued to help the women and girls we serve to the extent possible.

Since our last update, we have used donated funds to construct a small dwelling for a woman and her children.  The lady lost her employment due to the pandemic and was forced into homelessness.  The photos show the dwelling we constructed, and the lady and her children.

The lady, whose name is Elizabeth and who is 21 years old, was a beneficiary of our seminars to combat FGM.  As a result, she escaped female circumcision.  When she lost her employment and a place to live, the only alternative she had was to return to her extended family to live.  If she had done so she would again have been in danger of female circumcision, which is carried out on older women as well as young girls.  She appealed to us and we responded by constructing the dwelling for her and providing some modest support so that she would not be put in danger.

We thank all of our donors who make our work possible.
