By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenya
This quarter Cherish Others hosted men’s focus groups for discussions regarding the impact of COVID 19 on families, particularly with respect to the girl child.
This was important because, in the traditional Maasai communities, men remain the head of their families. At the same time, the girl child still remains at risk for FGM despite the pandemic and they may still be subject to early marriage due to poverty levels. Poverty has been made worse by the pandemic.
Our focus groups enabled us to provide in-depth sensitization on the impact of the pandemic and the many ways to preserve the rights of the girl child despite the great challenges of the pandemic.
Among many other issues, we discussed social distancing, washing of hands frequently, and ways of greeting and showing familial affection while avoiding bodily contact. We discussed the importance of working together and seeking community support in order to avoid situations in which the girl child might be put in jeopardy.
Teachers, community elders, and I led the focus groups and facilitated discussions.
