Our activity the past quarter highlights our support for the empowerment of girls by assisting with their education.
At the beginning of each year, when school starts in the Transmara, parents are burdened by the many basic needs their children require in order to attend school. Paying tuition, and buying books, shoes, school supplies, and book bags becomes a real hardship.
School uniforms are the most expensive items which parents must buy. Uniforms are required in Kenyan public schools. Cherish Others helped some parents by supporting them to acquire the uniforms for their children.
Cherish Others again expresses its appreciation to our donors. Your supports makes our work possible.

Cherish Others has continued to work to pursue both the well-being of girls in Transmara. A very important part of this work is involving parents, community leaders, and boys to support ending early marriage and FGM, and ensuring that girls get a good education.
As part of these efforts, Cherish Others donated two motorbikes to young men in the community who are supporting our efforts. One is a young man who has started teaching at a mixed primary school. He is helping by sensitizing the girls and the boys to these issues. He also serves as a good role model for the students.
The other is a young man who dropped out of high school, but who, through hard work, has managed to support himself. He is helping sensitize boys and girls to the importance of remaining in school. He shares with them the hardships he has encountered from not finishing school and shares with them the lessons he has learned on the importance of education.
We greatly appreciate the continuing support of our donors who make these efforts possible.

During this quarter we looked at the impact of our projects on education empowerment, and to counter the practice of female circumcision (FGM) and early marriage.
We relied on focus groups of girls who have participated in our programs about FGM and who have gone through our alternative rites of passage ceremonies. Based on the input of the girls, the impact appears to be highly positive. Ninety percent of the girls had managed to complete their primary school education and go on to secondary school. There were some who had still gotten married at a young age, but even some of them managed to continue their education.
These results indicate our projects are having a positive impact on communities in the Transmara region. It is clear that we are empowering girls to avoid the pitfalls of FGM and early marriage, and pursue their education. There is also a large health benefit, since girls and women who avoid female circumcision reduce the danger of obstructed labor and the development of fistulas. Overall, we believe that we are heading in the right direction.
