Intellectual disability:Busting Myths in Colombia

Nos encanta ponernos en contacto contigo nuevamente para contarte  lo que estamos haciendo gracias a tu apoyo.

Desde nuestro último informe seguimos  con nuestra  exposición fotográfica “Mi Primera Noticia” por diferentes espacios, llegamos con ella al hospital de la Universidad del Norte, donde también pudimos  participar en una tertulia para contarles a los profesionales de la salud, como informar a los nuevos padres el nacimiento de un hijo con síndrome de Down.

Nuestros afiliados adultos disfrutaron de una fabulosa jornada de arte y los más pequeños de 2 sesiones grupales de atención temprana  en las cuales recibieron como obsequio una kit para estimulación temprana en casa.

Pensando siempre en los más pequeños,  en alianza con la Secretaria de Gestión Social iniciamos un ciclo de formación sobre discapacidad  para agentes de primera infancia, cada semana el día miércoles realizamos talleres prácticos que han sido muy bien recibidos por los profesionales.

Durante estos 3 últimos meses venimos trabajando nuevamente en la formación de promotores de Inclusión del programa “No hay 2 iguales” y ya muchos niños más comienzan a disfrutar de los talleres en colegios oficiales de a ciudad.

MANY GOOD THINGS ARE GOING ON

We love to get in touch with you to tell you what we are doing thanks to your support.

Since our last report we have been moving the photographic exhibition "My first news” through different spaces, we arrived with this one to the hospital of the University of the North, where we were also able to participate in a social gathering to tell health professionals how to inform the parents about the birth of a baby with Down syndrome

Our adult affiliates enjoyed a fabulous art day and children under 5 enjoyed 2 group sessions in which they received as a gift an early stimulation kit for home.

Always thinking about the smallest, in partnership with the Social Management Secretary we started a cycle of training on disability for early childhood agents; every week on wednesday we held practical workshops which have been very well received by professionals.

During these last 3 months we have been working again in the formation of  Inclusion Promoters of the program there are “No2 are alike” and already many more children begins to enjoy the workshops in official schools of the city.

We want to invite you to follow us along this path where together we will achieve a more inclusive community.

“Cuando la pediatra entró, sonrió amablemente y con una voz serena me dijo: tu hija es hermosa  y perfecta  pero hay algunas características de ella que indican que tiene síndrome de Down” (Miladis Álvarez)

Así recibió Miladis la noticia, pero como no siempre es acertada la forma como los padres son informados,desde FUNDOWN CARIBE  dimos inicio a la campaña MI PRIMERA NOTICIA con la cual esperamos que el nacimiento de un hijo con síndrome de Down sea una experiencia más positiva para las familias; Es una exposición fotográfica itinerante con testimonios de diferentes familias, que está recorriendo centros comerciales, universidades, congresos y hospitales para concientizar y transformar ese momento.

Pero esta es una de las múltiples acciones que hemos iniciado desde nuestro último informe y que con ocasión de la conmemoración del Día Mundial del Síndrome de Down, en marzo pasado estamos ejecutando y queremos compartir contigo.

En las ciudades de Barranquilla y Santa Marta, iniciamos también la  campaña DETRÁS DE MI, con la cual a través de avisos en paraderos de transporte público y vallas llegamos a más de 60.000 personas  con mensajes  sobre la importancia que tiene  el apoyo que ofrece el entorno las personas con síndrome de Down. Gracias a esta campaña fuimos invitados  a participar en la Media Maratón de Barranquilla, en la cual jóvenes  y adultos  con síndrome de Down patrocinados por donantes de la comunidad pudieron hacer el recorrido Atlético.

Alrededor de 150 Familias y maestros se beneficiaron con las conferencias que realizamos para orientar sobre la familia y el ambiente educativo, tuvimos la oportunidad  de formar 250 estudiantes  en  temas de sexualidad e inclusión de las personas con discapacidad, como ponentes en universidades de la ciudad. Por primera vez  en nuestra región logramos que tanto la Asamblea  Departamental  del Atlántico como el Concejo Distrital de Barranquilla, permitieran la participación de jóvenes autogestores de nuestra fundación, a través de un espacio en el cual sus necesidades e inquietudes fueron escuchadas.

Sin lugar a dudas las personas como tú, que han venido apoyando nuestra causa de manera incondicional, pueden acompañarnos en la satisfacción del deber cumplido y seguir confiando en si aportamos juntos haremos de nuestro mundo un mejor lugar para todos.

Miladis received the news in this way, but sometimes the way the parents are informed is not always correct, for that reason we started the campaign MY FIRST NEWS with which we are hoping that the birth of a child with Down syndrome will become an experience more positive for families; It is an itinerant photographic exhibition with testimonies of different families, which is visiting shopping centres, universities, congresses and hospitals to raise awareness and transform that moment.

But this is just one of the many actions we started last March to mark the commemoration of World Down Syndrome Day, and we are still developing and we want to share with you.

In the cities of Barranquilla and Santa Marta, we also started the BEHIND ME campaign, with which, through posters on public transport stops and billboards, we reached more than 60,000 people with messages about the importance of the support offered by the environment to people with Down syndrome; thanks to this campaign we were invited to participate in the Barranquilla Half Marathon, in which youth and adults with Down syndrome sponsored by donors from the community were able to run the athletic course.

About 150 Families and teachers benefited from the conferences we held and we had the opportunity to train 250 students on issues of sexuality and inclusion of people with disabilities, as speakers at universities in the city. For the first time in our region we achieved that both the Departmental Assembly of the Atlantic and the District Council of Barranquilla, allowed the participation of young self-advocates of our foundation, through a space in which their needs and concerns were heard.

Undoubtedly, people like you, who have been supporting our cause unconditionally, can accompany us in the satisfaction of duty fulfilled and continue to trust that if we contribute together we will make our world a better place for all.
