Barani Village Housing Project Update: From Emergency Need to New Homes in Just 14 Weeks
Dear Friends,
We are delighted to share an exciting update on one of the most significant projects Books and Bread for Kenya has undertaken in recent years.
For the past 26 years, BBK has been working alongside communities in Kenya. During that time, we have helped build orphanages, established a rescue centre, supported hospitals, improved schools, and provided practical assistance to some of the most vulnerable families in the communities we serve.
One place that holds a special place in our hearts is Barani Village, just outside Mombasa.
For many years, BBK has supported children attending Barani Primary School, helping with school fees, uniforms, food, educational equipment, medical care and school improvements. Today, we remain committed to supporting 57 children, many of whom we have known and helped for more than a decade. Some have progressed to college and university, while others continue their education at school.
While this new housing project is currently our main focus, we continue to support all of our existing projects across Kenya. Our commitment to the children, families, schools and community programmes we have supported for many years remains unchanged, including distribution of reusable sanitary towels to school girls and new school uniforms.
How the Housing Project Began
While supporting the children, we have also become increasingly aware of the challenges facing their families.
Two of the families we have supported for several years are headed by Mama Kabibi and Mama Margaret. BBK has been paying rent for both families for the past four years.
Following severe flooding in the area, tragedy struck when Mama Kabibi’s home collapsed. Like many houses in the village, it had been built using mud, sticks and basic materials that could not withstand the extreme weather.
Suddenly homeless, Mama Kabibi and her three children were left without a safe place to live.
The situation made us realise that continuing to pay rent was not a long-term solution. We wanted to create something permanent that would provide security and stability for families who have already faced so many challenges.
Securing the Land
Just 14 weeks ago, Betty, our trusted community leader in Barani Village, told us about a piece of land becoming available close to both the school and the water well that BBK helped establish many years ago.
After conducting a land search and having all documentation checked by lawyers, BBK secured the land with a deposit.
A boundary wall was built around the site and a secure gate installed, creating a safe foundation for what would become a new housing project.
When Betty returned with quotations from local builders, The project was approved, and work began immediately.
Progress Beyond Our Expectations
Today, only 14 weeks later, we are thrilled to report that:
Foundations have been completed
Walls have been constructed
Roofs have been installed
Even better, BBK has been able to improve the original plans by adding:
These additions will provide greater comfort, dignity and independence for the families who will eventually live there.
The speed of progress has exceeded all expectations and demonstrates what can be achieved when local leadership, practical planning and generous supporters work together.
The Brick Appeal
None of this would have been possible without the incredible success of our Brick Appeal.
Thousands of pounds have been raised through donations, fundraising events and purchases from our charity shop.
Every brick purchased has helped transform an empty piece of land into homes that will change lives for generations to come.
To everyone who has contributed, we want to say a heartfelt thank you.
You have helped turn a crisis into an opportunity.
Looking Towards the Future
The success of this project has encouraged us to think bigger.
Thanks to an exceptionally generous donation received recently, BBK is now exploring the purchase of a second piece of land, located opposite the current development.
We are currently investigating options and hope this could become the next stage of providing secure housing and opportunities for families in Barani Village.
