Project Report | Apr 28, 2023
Classrooms Build in Mtwapa, Kenya

By Caroline Warren | Volunteer

Hello supporters,

It's April 2023 and chair/founder of Books and Bread for Kenya, Maureen and long term volunteer Caroline, have returned from a two-week visit to Kenya. During this time, Maureen and Caroline took a look at all the projects BBK supports and talked with the people BBK is involved with in Kenya.

Whilst you may know Books and Bread for Kenya (BBK) very well, sometimes it is nice for us to remind you of who we are and what we do.

BBK became a registered UK charity in February 2008 and its aims and objectives: To improve healthcare, advance education and relieve poverty to the people of Kenya.

At this moment, in April 2023, BBK is supporting two orphanages, Gates of Joy, Jesus Healing Ministry, and a rescue centre called Mother’s Vision. Over 70 children are supported with shelter, food, clothing, education and medical care. The children are very happy to have food, shelter, and an education.

BBK also provides aid to the poorest children at Barani Village Primary School, three impoverished Kenyan villages and individual help to people when necessary.

Kenya Visit April 2023

During this two-week visit, we managed to see each of the projects, all of which are doing well and further updates can be found on our website

The most heartwarming part of the trip, we helped to provide sanitary packs containing reusable sanitary towels, soap, and underwear to over 50 high school girls. however, the most important news we need to share with you is the update on funds we raised with the purpose to build classrooms at the rescue centre, Mother’s Vision.

Mother’s Vision Classrooms

After a thoroughly joyous evening at our fundraising Black Tie Event, Out Of Africa, in September 2022, we are thrilled to announce that we raised a whopping GBP 14,000, enough for us to complete two classrooms at the rescue centre. The purpose of these classrooms, to educate and empower the children and women, not only at Mother’s Vision but also in the surrounding community.

In September 2022 two of our trustees travelled to Kenya to see how our projects were doing and they discussed in-depth the building of the classrooms at Mother's Vision rescue centre.

In Africa, things move slowly, but the plans were drawn, the funds raised and we were awaiting approval to start building from the local chief and government officials.

However, on returning from Kenya in April 2023, things were different.

The Kenyan government took the decision to abolish all privately ran orphanages and return the children to their extended families. The children without a living relative would go into government orphanages.

Mothers’ Vision, as an institute, came under this umbrella of a private institution, and as such, over the next 9 years, the children must be returned to ANY surviving family member. As you know, our Rescue Centre only takes the most vulnerable children; returning them to their extended families would endanger the children.

The Kenyan government has changed since this law was established.  It is hoped that this law may be abolished before any harm is done.  BBK can only wait and see, however, to build classrooms in an establishment that may never be used would be foolish.

So how do we use the money raised?

The purpose was always to spend on building the classrooms and any excess funds on existing projects, however, whenever conducting fundraising for a certain project, we do caveat that the funds may also be used on existing BBK projects. Whilst this may not be ideal, it allows BBK to use the money wisely on our other projects.

One of our main priorities is to focus on helping each project to become self-sufficient or to raise living standards. Several options are available, for example, building shops at Jesus Healing Ministry for them to sell the crops they have grown, or helping Barani Primary School build a sanitary toilet block.

The Classrooms Project will be shelved for the moment but can easily be resurrected should circumstances change.

Further updates will be shared on our website, social media pages, newsletters and of course, here at GlobalGiving.

We thank everyone who has helped BBK to achieve so much and we hope that the new Kenyan Government revisits the whole issue of childcare.

Please reach out for any clarification that might be needed.

For now, we will continue with our other projects in Kenya.

Once again, thank you.

Your generosity helps change lives.

Yours sincerely
