Sunita* with wonders in her Eyes
Sunita* with wonders in her Eyes

8 Years old little Sunita* has been a student in our Model School- Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan ever since she joined. Resident of remote Nandakumarpur village in Mathurapur II block of Sunderbans infested South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, India she is the only child of her Parents. Her father Sunirmal* is a marginal farmer with a very little tract of land they own. As the earnings are not sufficient to run all family expense only by cultivating in own land, he also works as Daily Wage labourer for cultivation in others’ fields in the vicinity. Sunita’s* mother is a homemaker and struggles with the enduring drudgery of finance steep.

Calm and quiet by nature Sunita* with wonders in eyes is always eager to learn new things. Ever since she was promoted to 3rd standard in 2021 academic session, she is eagerly waiting for the Computer Classes to start.

As per the rule of school Computer Training Education starts from 3rd Standard. But with continuing and increased spread of Covid-19 Pandemic all educational institutions are closed since long period. So do our school as well as the Computer Classes.

The only mode of communication with her teachers are the classes for major subjects of Vernacular, Maths, Science, Social Science etc. being carried by creating WhatsApp groups. With dire poverty in house Sunita’s* father can’t afford to buy Android Phone.

In this situation Sunita* sometimes sharing the Smart pone of a friend stays nearby. She is excited with this digital experience, but still remains at gloom without any phone of their own.

With the long starched closure along with many other kids of the School she is now eagerly waiting for the classes to start again – more specifically awaiting the First Experience of touching the Computers and Operate.

Learning and Meeting Friends after a long time...
Learning and Meeting Friends after a long time...

Friends! It has been long since we communicated last!

We have been finding time to share on our efforts. We were extremely busy for restoring the communications with the Kids and their learnings.

The long drawn closure of Institutions for the still continuing Pandemic Covid -19 our Computer Classes were closed.

We were accumulating all our strength...to reopen our Computer Classes… or… even if not at least reaching out to the little buds who are eagerly waiting….. to come and open the computers again.

Thus we started conducting our Computer Classes through distance learning mode. It created a wave of excitement among the little pupils who belong majorly to vulnerable marginalised families never thought of such kind of experience ever before. As most of the families don’t have any Smart Android Phones the teachers and local people volunteered their own smart phones to support the little minds restore to their education. WhatsApp groups were created and the communications for learning between the learners and teachers started.

Other subjects of the Model School ‘Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan’ also thus started restoring through distance learning mode with Smart Phones.

With relaxations in closure some senior boys are gradually coming classes in person now.

The gadgets for communicatiuons he Computers, Smart Phones are silently establishing the motto of ‘Access to Knowledge for All.’, thus grdually creating a revolution in the education system of remote Sunderbans villages.

Yet we need to extend our efforts for many other such little buds in Sunderbans communities and ensure there access to knowledge!

In the still continuing uncanny situation we desperately need more support from all of you.

Please come forward in supporting the noble cause and spread the message toi as much people you can.

File Picture- Rikta* in Computer Class

Around 8 Years old Rikta* studies in 3rd Standard at our model school- ‘Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan’ (KSSN). Her father Mr. Supratik*, a small business with around INR 4000.00 monthly earning sustain the family expenses in steep financial hardship.  At Covid -19 Pandemic outbreaks, even that little livelihood resource is affected deeply with continued lock down following Govt. Directives of continued lock down. This has made their living miserable. Majorly they continued the sustenance with help from Sabuj Sangha (Dry Ration Materials) and some other open hearted individuals who stood by strongly in these extreme times of uncanny.

Rikta* got introduced to Computers Operation only from this year. She is seen to be highly enthusiastic in learning various facets of Computers. She has got quiet proficient in Paints application or creating Folder etc. within two months of Classes.

Rikta* has become little morose ever since school got closed and Computer lessons halted following the Govt. Directives for arresting Covid-19 Pandemic. Yet she looks ahead to see his school open again and Computer Classes resumed.

In her Father’s word,” I am too poor and meet family expenses with too hard effort. In such condition my daughter Rikta* learning computer is like a Dream to me. This has become possible only for ‘Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan’ the school run by Sabuj Sangha.”

Mrinal* drawing house in Computers
Mrinal* drawing house in Computers

Amidst worldwide fast spreading Covid-19 all our educational units, also got closed for indefinite period following the govt. order of nationwide lockdown and closure of education institutions. We regret only for this reason we are not able to provide timely reporting.

Also on 20th May, 2000 the severe cyclone Amphan with around 200 Km/ hour gale wind devastated Sunderbans vastly including many of our establishments through which we support to the deprived vulnerable marginalized communities in deep hard to reach Sunderbans.

But we are in consistent touch with all our pupils who mostly belong to financially back trodden families in deep remote Sunderbans. With the opportunities they receive through Access of Knowledge- learning Computers they got an entry to world of dreams – a wider spectrum that is making them confident and strong within – making the timid children competent for the life ahead. Such a case we are giving today here-

Mrinal Kar*, a student of 4th standard in Sabuj Sangha run Model School ‘Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan’ have growing fascinations in Computers. He started learning Computers since last one year as part of his curriculum in the school when he was in 3rd standard.

The Time & Date options, drawing objects and sceneries of villages by the Paints applications, writing down his thoughts in Words application – all attracts him deeply. His father an impoverished Carpenter in the remote village of Sunderbans, who sustain family expenses is overwhelmed on his son’s learning Computers. In his own words, “I can’t express how happy am I. We never thought before, that our son can learn Computers too.”

With the nationwide closure as the school is closed since 23rd March, 2020 Mrinal is little dusheartened and morrows. But he stiil has deep trust that he will draw iin Computers again.

We are grateful all those who continued in our Noble Mission to make the ill-fated marginalized children of Sunderbans become equipped with Computers and be competent for the future world of competitions.

We appeal to all to please extended the message and lend your supporting hands to make the little buds of Sunderbans learn Computers and become fit contenders for all future battles.

Also appeal please extend your hands with these little children whose very hopes were devastated with the fiery storm ‘Amphan’ amidst the continuous nationwide lock down.
