Digital literacy makes our student as Hero

By Surajit Mondal | Programme coordinator Education

As technology continues to lead society’s future, computer in the school classroom are a very common sight in the urban areas and cities. But the scenarios in the remote villages  like Nandakumarpur are completely different. We find here our kids are far behind in terms of using computers and technologies. We realized this fact and intended to promote computer learning in our model school KSSN. After spending a decade and half with success, we realize that without proper computer knowledge their holistic development will remain unsuccessful and they cannot shine and earn enough in future. There is hardly any school in Nandakumarpur village with computer facilities. As we are committed to ensure quality education for children of rural area, we started the computer classes for last two years from standard III to VIII. We find there are few students who are exceptionally very interested in computer classes and their interest in computer classes are gradually increasing day by day.

At the beginning of the present session  i,e 2017, we targeted our students to have at least some basics knowledge like MS Word, Painting, finding out information’s from Google, Google maps searching etc. as they acquired very basics knowledge’s in the previous year. But it is not easy to make all of them comfortable in computer operating within a session as we hardly find any student having computer in their home. Realising this fact, we divided the whole class in junior section (from standard III and IV, consist of 48 students) and senior section (from section V to VIII, consist of 30 students).

Here, we started the session with painting and learning of notepad for the junior section. Now most of them can work in notepad in their own and they make several documents in it as they wish. They are even more interested in different games especially chess but here we follow some restriction, we often do not allow them in gaming. They love to paint as they wish. Ushashi and Ayanika are two bright students of standard IV, are very enthusiastic in painting in computer. We have plan to make them also enable to work in MS Word, Excel, and so on, according to their syllabus. Besides practical classes, they are also very regular participant in theoretical classes and it is also important from their exam point of view. At very recent, they learnt how to create and open a Google gmail account and send mail to each other. Even now a day, they share different documents in themselves. Swadhin, a bright student of standard seven of our model school recently sent a mail to his father who works in Bangalore. He was so happy to see that and greeted our computer teacher. They are getting regular computer classes under the guidance of our computer teacher and he is working hard to fulfill our wish. Our next target is to learn them power point presentation and how to work in excel. Later, they will be taught how to use Google for searching information’s.
