Access to Knowledge through Computer Education

Sabuj Sangha remained consistent in their intent to ensure quality education of the underprivileged children in Sundarbans. They remained active in their journey for attaining the mission even in this long and still continuing Pandemic.

To make these children fit for present competitive world they were given exposure to Computers also. Initially the Computer Classes were started with lessons of basic operating of Computers. But with time and space we ventured into catering the Knowledge for Hardware also.

Since quite a few years Sabuj Sangha is running a residential school meant for prevention of Child Labour namely ‘Natun Alo- Abasik Sishu Sramik Vidyalaya’. Children who were about to become or had become Child Labourers were salvaged stays there. They are given formal education and all grooming support and care to become a responsible citizen of the nation.

All these boys are also given Computer Lessons to ensure their access to knowledge through Computers. Some of the senior boys have shown their deep interest. These boys study in the higher standard classes 9^th -11^th standard in the formal school.

Today we’ll share story of boy from this group who portrayed an extraordinary skill and interest to learn computers and also aspire to opt a profession with the knowledge…

Bansi* wants to be Computers Expert when grows up….

Around 17 Years old son of a fisherman Bansi* Sardar aspires a bright well built future for themselves. His father is a Fisherman and Mother sells fish in the nearby market and strives in extreme poverty. Bansi* became a daily wager- a supporting labourer in the fishing trade for supporting his family.  

They were identified by a Sabuj Sangha staff and sensitized on essentiality of education in proper upbringing of a Child as a responsible citizen. Thus Bansi* got admitted to the Residential School meant for arresting the trend of Child Labour (Abasik Sishu Sramik Vidyalaya) run by Sabuj Sangha in the beginning of 2018. He is now at 10^th standard and gradually mastering on the curriculum subjects.

Sober and nonchalant by nature, Bansi* loves play Chase and Memory Games etc. Legendary scientist Isac Newton is his favourite personality.

He has an extra- ordinary interest in Computers. With his inquisitive minds he learnt how to dismantle and then again assemble a Personal Desktop Computer. His potential was observed by the Computer Teacher of the school. The teacher was immensely impressed by his talent and sincerity.

With growing times Bansi* aspires to be a Computer Engineer when grows up.

Weneed to reach many other such vulnerable children girls falling prey of poverty, trafficking, child labour or sexual exploitation. They need the support to build their own future …. And lead towards a life of dignity and self esteem.

8 Years old little Sunita* has been a student in our Model School- Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan ever since she joined. Resident of remote Nandakumarpur village in Mathurapur II block of Sunderbans infested South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, India she is the only child of her Parents. Her father Sunirmal* is a marginal farmer with a very little tract of land they own. As the earnings are not sufficient to run all family expense only by cultivating in own land, he also works as Daily Wage labourer for cultivation in others’ fields in the vicinity. Sunita’s* mother is a homemaker and struggles with the enduring drudgery of finance steep.

Calm and quiet by nature Sunita* with wonders in eyes is always eager to learn new things. Ever since she was promoted to 3^rd standard in 2021 academic session, she is eagerly waiting for the Computer Classes to start.

As per the rule of school Computer Training Education starts from 3^rd Standard. But with continuing and increased spread of Covid-19 Pandemic all educational institutions are closed since long period. So do our school as well as the Computer Classes.

The only mode of communication with her teachers are the classes for major subjects of Vernacular, Maths, Science, Social Science etc. being carried by creating WhatsApp groups. With dire poverty in house Sunita’s* father can’t afford to buy Android Phone.

In this situation Sunita* sometimes sharing the Smart pone of a friend stays nearby. She is excited with this digital experience, but still remains at gloom without any phone of their own.

With the long starched closure along with many other kids of the School she is now eagerly waiting for the classes to start again – more specifically awaiting the First Experience of touching the Computers and Operate.
