Powerful Graffitis For Social Change

International Day for the Elimination of Violence
International Day for the Elimination of Violence

Tiempo de Juego Santa Marta has started in Juli 2018 with the project "Grafitis for Social Change" in the community La Lucha. In several activities TDJ involved the community and the kids to promote a peaceful coexistence, harmonious communication and and team work between neighbours of  the community due to street art. Furthermore we created a platform to exchange stories, memories and to emphasise the talent of people.

Together with the kids of Tiempo de Juego, their parents, the community La Lucha, the help of national and international volunteers, donations and artists we have generated three grafitis so far:

- Graffiti: "The history of La Lucha": The first graffiti tells the story of the neighborhood and the importance of the huge tree "Caracolí", as well as the origin of the name "La Lucha". The colombian artist "Tufic" invited the comunity to tell him their own story of the neighborhood and visualized it in a impressive streetart. Due to the exchange of perspectives on history between the community everybody can learn from each other and share experience. Reflection helps to understand what has happened in the past and creates identification and cohesion in the community,

- Graffiti: "Sierra Nevada": 16-year old Rosa Maria Romero which belongs to Tiempo de Juego since the beginning in 2015 won the streetart competition of Tiempo de Juego "Graffitis for La Lucha to promote peace". Together with the french artist @onlyclarity she helped to realize her drawing of the nature of the Sierra Nevada in the main street of La Lucha.

- Graffiti: "Eliminiation of violence against women": Due to the International Day of the "Eliminiation of violence against women" on November 29th, the colombian artist @arboleda and the community realized the graffiti of the powerful hands "Together we fight for women respect" which has a powerful location: the center of La Lucha.

Art has the power to transform lives in the community, to improve the conditions of the neighborhood as well as their image. After finishing the three grafitis we have realize that people present their neighborhood with more pride and interacting more than before. That helps to improve the peaceful communication in La Lucha but as well the communication between Tiempo de Juego and La Lucha

We're celebrating one year of achievements!

On November 20th, Fundación Tiempo de Juego celebrated it's 12th anniversary and had the pleasure to enjoy the presence of Dr. Harvey Milkman, the renowned reseracher that helped Iceland stop teen substance abuse through free time activities.

At our annual fundraising event, we celebrated that in 2018 we were able to work with more than 5.400 children in 20 different cities of Colombia. The work we initially started with 1500 colombian kids at risk has more than triple its impact and has also proven that it can work in new environments such as schools and with teenagers deprived of their liberty.

At Metropolitan State College of Denver, Dr. Milkman was instrumental in developing the idea that people were getting addicted to changes in brain chemistry. "Why not orchestrate a social movement around natural highs: around people getting high on their own brain chemistry? Because it seems obvious to me that people want to change their consciousness - without the deleteriour effects of drugs" (Harvey Milkman, PhD)

Dr. Milkman visited Fundación Tiempo de Juego in Colombia and validated the model that is helping 1500 Colombian kids at risk through music.

We thank the support you've given Fundación Tiempo de Juego this year to be able to provide children and youth with an opportunity to have natural highs through music. We would like to share images of our work. Please enjoy the wonderful work achieved this year here: https://www.facebook.com/FundacionTiempodeJuego/

Thank you for joining Fundación Tiempo de Juego too. The ball keeps rolling!
