2019-RHS-NewAcademicSession

By Sri Ram | Project Leader

The school has earnestly started its academic year but with a great challenge. a sudden announcement of the State Government to award scholarships for the children, many parents wanted to have their wards join Government schools to avail that scholarship. But with advocacy, the state government revised its criterion that any child in any school shall get the scholarship, BCT was able to have the total strength to 175. This school complex is an integrated one with Speech and Hearing Impaired children also residing with the high school children.
Amenities are also being provided so that the children have a comfortable living and learning environment, for which, classrooms are being equipped with benches while the dormitories are being furnished with beds with storage facilities. Further, the adolescent girls are being constantly talked to by a trained nurse on the hygiene aspects as well as the usage of sanitary napkins and safe disposal thereof. An incinerator is also placed in the girl's dormitory for their use. A new health centre has been inaugurated with a nurse and doctor attending every alternate day while two teachers are trained for first aid.
One of the aspects of the students is to become change agents in the villages. As part of this, the adolescent high school girls are also sent into villages to train local girls on hygiene aspects and also stressing that fact that it is a normal, natural phenomenon (not a taboo as made out in the villages) so that they can attend school normally. This effort from the past three years has made a tremendous impact such that there is about 30% increase in the attendance of adolescent girls in local high schools.
On the skills training aspect, the curriculum for the students is being revised such that they learn at least three or four aspects of agriculture thoroughly instead of being  a 'jack of all, master of none.' The yarn spinning on the Gandhian Charka is continuing as designed. Plans are afoot to see how to introduce new-age courses like Electronics 101 for these children.
