MALARIA SCREENING IN ZAMBULKURA PRIMARY SCHOOL-MAY 2022

This is a report on Project 53920- Treat 6000 children with malaria in Zambulkura area by Rescue and Restore Hope Zambulkura Ghana. The Malaria screening and treatment of children took place on 28th May 2022. Donations of funds received from GlobalGiving (GG) made it possible for us to carried out the program. After we received the funds from GG we bought Rapid malaria test kits, Anti-Malaria medicines, cough syrup, multivitamins for children, De-wormers, and Paracetamol syrup in Accra and traveled to the program site in Zambulkura. Available funds for this program were limited so we targeted children in Zambulkura primary school, however mothers who brought their children from the communities who were not enrolled in the school, some pregnant women and few  aged people were allowed to take part in the screening and treatment.  A week before the screening date of 28th May 2022, we sent message to the school to inform them of the medical team coming for the screening and treatment of children with malaria in the school.

At the end of the screening a total of 436 people were screened and those tested positive for malaria were 77(17.66%). All positive cases were treated with malaria medications and those with other health conditions including non-communicable diseases, depending on the situation were treated by the medical team or referred to Nalerigu Baptist hospital for further treatment.   Out of the total of 436 people who got screened and treated 98 (22.48%) were children between 0-5 years. Children age 6-17 years were 292 (66.97) and those 18 years and above were 46 (10.55) .

From the test results, 98 children were age 0-5years with 17 of them, representing (17.35%) tested positive for malaria. Children age 6-17years who took part in the screening were 292, out of which 53 tested positive for malaria representing (18.15%). For the adults mostly pregnant women and the aged who took part were 46, with 7 of them representing (15.22%) tested positive for malaria. From the test results, children of school going age group had the highest number of positive malaria cases of 53 (18.15%). Whenever there are many school children suffering from the malaria disease it has negative impact on school attendance as many children absent themselves from school due to the malaria disease. If the disease is untreated early, it often leads to complications and possibly death. But with the funds from GG it has made it possible for us to be carrying the health screenings more regularly, as such the disease impact on the people is reducing. Since the beginning of 2022 there have not been death among the school children this year.

CONCLUSION

The regular inflow of funds, though small from GG has made it possible for our team to be carrying regular malaria screening and treatment in Zambulkura and its surrounding communities. This has helped in reducing the negative impact of malaria in the lives of the people particularly children in the area. In the previous screening and treatment we carried out, 894 people were screened with 243 testing positive for the disease which represented (27.18%), compared to this current screening of a total of 436 people with 77 people testing positives for malaria which represents (17.66%). Among the positive cases 3 children were severe malaria and were referred to the Baptist Medical Hospital in Nalerigu for further treatment.

Certainly, the regular activities of Rescue and Restore Hope in the Zambulkura area has been made possible because of the magnanimity of our awesome donors, and the great work of GlobalGiving, and its wonderful team for providing such a great platform to mobilize funds to make such positive impact in the lives of our communities. Together we have saved precious live in these deprived communities in the Zambulkura area through the interventions.

Rescue and Restore Hope Zambulkura Ghana,  will continue to work to ‘’rescue and to restore hope’’ to the deprived and vulnerable in Zambulkura and its surrounding communities, and hope our partnership with GlobalGiving, and our cherish donors will continue to improve, and together we will complete our second project of a 40-bed capacity health facility we have started in Zambulkura to make healthcare services easily accessible to the people and save more lives.

Thank you very much to our amazing and wonderful donors and our ever-supportive GG Team.
