With the aim to decrease the infant mortality rate Imkaan established a 24/7 maternity home in January 2018. The only maternity home catering to a population of 800,000 people, the women of the community can finally opt to give birth in a medically conducive environment, get a consultation on high-risk pregnancies, track the progress of their baby, and be guided regarding nutrition throughout their pregnancy and initiating a process of learning and awareness regarding their own health issues
The closest maternity home/hospital is 45 minutes away from Machar colony. Lack of transportation makes it difficult for women of the community to seek help/consult with qualified midwives during their pregnancy. The community is also known for using traditional birth attendants or dais for giving birth at home. Such measures lead to complex home birth leading to the demise of either the mother or the child.
Through the maternity home, Imkaan focuses to reduce the incidence of maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in the area, facilitate communities to access quality skilled maternity care including post-natal and antenatal support to women of Machar Colony and create awareness regarding family planning and the importance of planned parenthood, awareness regarding nutritional needs of the mother after delivery and child after birth.
The maternity home helps women of the community to consult with lady health workers who can guide them regarding safety measures and nutrition throughout their pregnancy. Monthly ultrasounds help them track the progress of their child allows the diagnosis of high-risk pregnancies at an early stage. Consultations with a gynecologist and with the lady health workers also initiate a process of learning and awareness regarding their own health issues and those of the family.
