Project Report | Dec 17, 2019
Syrian refugee, Shaima

By Alexander Whittle | Communications Manager

We were in our village when the missiles and bombs hit. All of the houses were destroyed. An explosion happened at the back of the school, so, that’s when I stopped going. I could hear loud screaming from the pain.

I told my father we should leave and go to Jordan. Everyone said it was far better there. So, we decided to go.

We had to walk about 72 km. When we walked in the sun from the early morning, it got very hot in the afternoon. On the journey my sister got sunstroke and died.

I don’t feel I can talk to my mother about my sister’s death, because she’s grieving for my sister a lot. I don’t like to see tears on her face. I felt sad—our family was very close, and suddenly, we were torn apart.

I wish I could turn back time but there is nothing I could do.

I wake up at five or six in the morning. I bring a pan full of water inside. I would heat the water because it is very cold from outside. Then, I check my homework, before I go to school.

I like school a lot because I get to learn a lot of different things. I am in the sixth grade, and we are taught really well. Today we had maths, and we learned how to divide numbers. I really enjoy it.

When I get back from school, I wash, do my homework, and then I go to the football pitch, where I meet my friends.

When I came here, World Vision encouraged me to play football. So now I like it, and I’m not scared anymore.

I feel comfortable and safe here because there are lots of activities.

World Vision field Coordinator, Odai:

World Vision provides water, sanitation, and hygiene education. The water pumps were built by World Vision.

We have hygiene education for the children at the kindergarten, and we distribute hygiene kits for all the girls and women at the camp.

We also do a daily food distribution of date bars and juice to all of the children who come to the school.

We have 100 children who come to the pitch every day, and we keep them occupied with sports and leisure activities. It helps to keep them safe.

Shaima is hoping to become a pediatrician because of the suffering she witnessed. God willing, she will be a pediatrician, and she will achieve her dreams
