At the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF), we believe that access to clean and safe water is a basic human right, especially for children. Yet, in many communities across Southeastern Nigeria, children are forced to drink contaminated water, leading to preventable illnesses, poor health outcomes, and limited educational opportunities.
The “No Child Should Drink Dirty Water” initiative was created to address the urgent need for safe drinking water, raising awareness about hygiene and sanitation, and laying the groundwork for sustainable water projects that can transform communities.
Project Activities During This Period
During this reporting period, the team has focused on preparatory work, awareness campaigns, and community engagement, given the limited resources available.
Key activities include:
• Community sensitization on the dangers of drinking contaminated water
• Engaging local leaders, schools, and health workers to promote hygiene practices
• Mapping areas with the most urgent need for clean water interventions
• Preparing project proposals and logistical plans for future water infrastructure development
The project is capital-intensive, requiring significant investment to provide clean water access to multiple communities. Despite these financial constraints, the team has maximized available resources to create awareness and educate communities.
Challenges
The project faces several significant challenges:
• High cost of infrastructure – Clean water systems such as boreholes, filtration units, and storage tanks require substantial funding.
• Limited funding – No donations have yet been received specifically for this project.
• Community engagement needs – Ensuring sustained usage and maintenance of water facilities requires ongoing education and monitoring.
• Logistical hurdles – Remote locations and poor access roads make planning and implementation more complex.
Despite these challenges, SOHF remains dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to safe drinking water.
Little by Little Fundraising Campaign (17–20 March)
We are excited to share that the Little by Little fundraising campaign will take place from 17th to 20th March, providing a timely opportunity for supporters to directly contribute to this critical initiative.
Funds raised during this campaign will be used to:
• Develop clean water access points in targeted communities
• Procure filtration systems, boreholes, and water storage units
• Conduct hygiene and sanitation awareness programs in schools and community centers
• Train local community members on water system maintenance and safe practices
Even small donations can make a life-saving difference, helping prevent waterborne diseases and improve health outcomes for children.
Next Steps
Once sufficient funding is secured, the project will:
• Begin construction and installation of clean water systems in high-need communities
• Distribute safe water storage containers and filtration tools to households
• Conduct regular hygiene education sessions for children and community members
• Monitor water quality and ensure sustainability through local maintenance teams
• Expand the program to additional communities based on lessons learned
These steps will ensure that children no longer have to drink unsafe water, promoting health, education, and community resilience.
