PLANE Scales Campaign To Fight HIVAmong Youths
PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) has scaled up the campaign of Every Hour Matters in Ugandan schools and communities in the Districts of Kabarole, Fort Portal City.
We’ve moved to secondary schools and used the radio talk shows using the student leaders and role models to sensitize the people especially the youth and adolescents who are more affected by HIV and unwanted pregnancies.
In Kabarole district and Fort Portal city, HIV prevalence rate is alarmingly high. Kabarole district has a high prevalence rate of 11.6% and Fort Portal it stands at 14.1%
By using the radio talkshows and combing students in secondary schools sensitizing the people will enable adolescents and women access post rape services.
During the dialogues with students and talkshows, we encourage them to use emergency contraception that are effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy for up to 120 hours, though it is most effective within a 72-hour window.
We also advise them to use Post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, a way of preventing HIV infection that involves using a four-week course of the drugs used to treat HIV, taken very soon after one been exposed to the virus. In the event of unprotected sex, an emergency contraceptive pill will stop a pregnancy from occurring.
A total of five secondary schools were reached and sensitized and 03 radio talkshows conducted to create more awareness about HIV prevention and the access to PEP and PreP services.
PLANE would like to appreciate GlobalGiving for offering us the opportunity to fundraise and mobilize resources here. We extend our gratitude to our esteemed donors of different campaigns here on GlobalGiving for the financial support. We understand the situation outside there but every dollar donated makes a difference in the lives of many Ugandans. PLANE continues to appeal for the support to support the implementation of our programs and reaching more underserved communities.
