Empowering Survivors: Quarterly Report on Enhancing Access to Post-Rape Care
Introduction
PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) is dedicated to supporting vulnerable women and girls in Uganda. This quarterly report highlights our achievements, appreciation for donors, challenges, and future plans in enhancing access to post-rape care services.
Post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, is a way of preventing HIV infection. It involves using a four-week course of the drugs used to treat HIV, taken very soon after you may have been exposed to the virus. In the event of unprotected sex, an emergency contraceptive pill will stop a pregnancy from occurring. It can work up to 3-5 days (or 120 hours) after unprotected sex, depending on the brand you use. Most people around the world Uganda inclusive aren't aware that medication exists.
Achievements
- Conducted outreach programs in 10 schools, sensitizing 2,500 students on teenage pregnancies and early marriages
- Provided knowledge about the access to post-rape care services, including emergency pills and PEP to prevent HIV, at 5 health center IVs
- Conducted 07 radio talk shows on Jubilee FM and VOT, reaching 20,000 listeners and raising awareness on the importance of post-rape care
