Education in Nepal

This is the season for the new school year in Nepal and after a very disrupted couple of years due to the pandemic, a consistent and successful school year is important to the learners as well as teachers and families. 

One of the keys is a safe and healthy learning environment. There is no doubt that an inviting and stimulating environment is conducive to learning.  It helps makes school a great place to be. 

Your support has contributed to improvements to school environments. Refurbishments include, thorough cleaning, patching and repainting. Painting gives the classroom a fresh clean look. Some schools have requested education-based murals to make the learning environment stimulating and professional. Teachers and learners appreciate these developments in their schools as does the wider community. 

School desks are also a way that the Education in Nepal project is supporting schools. Stable desks with space for storage create more space in a classroom and mean that students' books and stationery can be stored and accessed efficiently. Schools are often keen to have additional storage and so shelving can be made for classroooms.

A further aspect of our program has been tree planting in schools. Bringing nature into the school environment is beneficial to the whole community.  It also draws attention to the benefits of tree planting in countering climate change, and helps students to learn about caring for plants as they grow and develop.  In the longer term, trees produce shade during the hotter seasons.

Aside from the benefits to the school environment, the Education in Nepal project also supports small group learning support for students and the development of educational resources for classrooms. After a very disrupted couple of years any small roup support is beneficial to both students and teachers. 

We really appreciate your ongoing support.  Throughout the world education systems have particularly faced challenges in the past couple years and it may take many years to recover. It is vital that schools provide a routine, stable and environment where they can ad that students remain motivated to learn and develop. 

The Education in Nepal project strives to support schools where they can. Teachers and students benefit from your ongoing support and with continued effort we can help bridge the gaps that have accured in disrupted learning.

Education in Nepal    Nov 2021

Education across the world has been harshly hit by the pandemic.   Inger Ashing, CEO of Save the Children, said, 

“This pandemic has already caused the biggest global education emergency in history, and the increase in poverty will make it very hard for the most vulnerable children and their families to make up for the loss”.     She called on support from National governments and the international community to support.

Our project strives to support education in Nepal.  We promote learning opportunities for children and adults and work to improve learning environments.   

Let’s take a look at some of the ways our project is taking action particularly in a time where students have missed so much learning time.

School Refurbishments

Schools and other learning facilities have ongoing needs  Repainting, repairs, and general maintenance can be costly and are not always a priority, A well kept and stimulating environment is beneficial to students.  Your support means that we can work with the local community to make improvements to schools and centres.  Classrooms, bathrooms and the school grounds can be refurbished as part of the programme.

Resources

Educational resources are also where we can support. This includes materials to promote curriculum areas including art and sports. Resources that can help teachers to explain concepts and can be displayed in classrooms for reference. Extra resources can also make learning more interactive. A range of books as well as shelving to display these resources are ways that we have worked together with schools to improve their learning materials.

Workshops for teachers 

Facilitating Workshops for teachers means that we promote an environment to share ideas, It has been a challenging time for teachers.  They feel a responsibility towards student learning but students have missed large chunks of classroom time.  Continuity has suffered. Teacher workshops can build camaraderie, be a forum for sharing ideas and be a great platform for learning new things.  New ideas can be brought to the classrooms with a positive impact on children’s learning.

Community workshops for women

The benefits of networking and interaction of women in the community can not be underestimated.  Lockdowns have meant many feel isolated and getting community workshops back on track is a positive way we are able to support communities.  Women continue to be enthusiastic about learning English and love the opportunity to attend regular classes.  The added benefit is they can help their children or grandchildren with their English lessons too! English is not the only topic we cover in workshops.  Health and areas of general interest also make it onto the ‘needs’ list.  But most of all, it is a great opportunity for socializing and interacting with others.

We appreciate your ongoing support for the education project.  We are able to reach a wide range of community members and ensure we support learning programmes to get back on track after a  challenging couple of years. School-age children, as well as adults, need access to educational opportunities. 

 I refer to Inger Ashing’s speech again who said    “We cannot afford to let a whole generation of children become victims of this pandemic.”   

 Our programme will continue to support education whether it improving learning environments, supporting teachers or contributing resources can all help.
