During the assessment and distribution of relief materials in Dolakha (in May 2015), the ECCA team found heavy damages to school buildings, WASH infrastructure and health threat among children and even among adult and elderly people. Most of school students’ education materials were buried under the debris, due to which they were anxious on how to restart their school life. Therefore, there was an urgent need of recovery and rehabilitation program for the school students.

At first, ECCA conducted a three days TOT training program for the youth volunteers on 17th-19th June 2015 at ECCA premises Kathmandu. The youths were trained on WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), Life Skills along with psychological activities specially designed for the current situation so as to help the students recover from the traumatized situation and continue their studies at school.

Immediately after the training, 20 youth volunteers (divided into 4 groups) were mobilized at 4 project schools of Mirge, Dolakha (Majh Gaun Lower Secondary School, Mirge 1; Kali Dhunga Higher Secondary School, Mirge 7; Kali Devi Secondary School, Payele; and Lali Gurash Bright Future English School, Laligurash Danda). They stayed there for 5 days (22nd -26th June, 2015) and facilitated different fun, skillful, engaging and relieving activities for all the 664 students of the four schools to support them to get back to their normal school lives again. To conduct the WASH and Life Skill Camp in harmony and to gain the maximum benefit from the camp program, class wise division was done into 4 categories- Class 1-3, 4-5, 6-8 and 9-10.

Shyam, member of ‘Majh Gaun Nature Club’ expressed “It was ECCA counselors who first taught us how to make chlorine solution (WATASOL). They provided us with all the required materials and gave us enough training. Now we can prepare WATASOL on our own and protect ourselves from water borne diseases.” Likewise, mother of Bilash of class 3 from Shree Kali Dhunga Higher Secondary School expressed that she was very happy to see positive impacts on her son. He shared his learning and taught the hand washing method to his family members.

As the devastating earthquake destroyed the water sources, the chances of contracting water borne diseases have increased. To prevent an outbreak, the students were taught hand washing activity and the production and use of WATASOL for water purification.

“I have seen progressive change in the behavior and regular attendance of the students due to the camp activities. Now, the students are more active, energetic and lively in the schools. The technique is very effective as they are learning through fun and interactive activities. Again, I am very grateful to ECCA team and the volunteers for all the support and the help.”- Words shared by Puskar, Teacher of Kali Dhunga Higher Secondary School, Mirge 7.            

Psychological activities were also included in the camp sessions to help the students recover from the trauma they were facing due to the earthquake. Many students were mentally disturbed and not in a state to attend schools continuously. So as to help the students, different activities like- Sharing experience, Dominant and non dominant hand exercise, yesterday today tomorrow, Anger Management, Draw your safe space, Balloon blast and coping skill via ball games were performed. These activities helped the students to minimize their distress.

ECCA supported a day meal in all the project schools for the students and the staff members during the training period. Due to shortage of food materials, students were not attending the schools earlier. Day meal helped the students to come to the school continuously.

Ramji, Kali Devi Lower Secondary School shared “I express my gratitude to ECCA for supporting stationery materials (copy, dot pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners) for all the students and game materials (carom board, chess board, ludo, skipping, football, volleyball and flying disk), first aid kit, jerry cans, white boards and markers for school. ECCA also supported the construction of water tank in the school as devastating earthquake of 12th May, 2015 severely damaged water tanks of our school.”

Immediately after the earthquake, for a month, ECCA focused its resources in relief works. Thereafter, ECCA started focusing on recovery and rehabilitation works. As ECCA has been working through the school system in the past years, now also, ECCA is focusing its post-quake recovery and rehabilitation works through the school system and reaching the adjoining communities.

After the earthquake, as per the government of Nepal announcement, schools re-opened from 31st May. Since then, in the period of 3 weeks (till 20th June), ECCA conducted WASH and Life Skill Camps (3-days each) in 17 schools located in Lalitpur, South Lalitpur and Kavre. All of these camps targeted all the students (from class 1 to 10) in the schools, by dividing them into 4 groups (grade 1-3, 4-5, 6-8, 9-10). The ECCA team consisted of 4 to 6 trained counselors (depending upon the no. of school students).

Under WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene), students were briefed on the need to use safe drinking water and various water disinfection methods (with specific reference to use of chlorine solution) so as to prevent the occurrence of water borne diseases (Note: there is high risk of occurrence of such epidemics after natural disasters).

Under the Life skill, focus was on helping students overcome the earthquake trauma through different educational games and activities. It is essential to relieve children’s stress and motivate them to come to school (even if they need to study in make shift sheds / large tents / large tarpaulin). (Note: Due to the damage incurred inside the school and their house, due to many earthquake aftershocks, due to human casualties among their relatives and friends, many students are in a state of shock and are mentally disturbed.)

In addition to the camps, education materials (copy, pencil, erasure, dot pen) were distributed to all the students in those schools. Due to the destruction of their houses, students have lost their books, copies, stationeries (in their house debris), including other materials.

Sabita, student of grade 9 in Goth Bhanjyang Higher Secondary School Dalchoki, South Lalitpur says “The depression that I had due to the damage caused by the earthquake, and the fear that I had when coming to school (which is also partly damaged) is now reduced after attending the camp.” Students who were reluctant to work in group activities in the beginning participated actively in later sessions. The number of students attending the school also increased after the start of the camp.

Coordination was done with the school management, when selecting the schools for the camp. The school teachers were also very supportive and participated in the camp activities. The teachers observed that the students were more active and outgoing as the camp progressed. Due to lack of educational materials, the school conducts very limited extracurricular activities. Thus, the activities taught in the camp were very advantages to the students.

A devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake on 25th April in Nepal claimed life of above 7,800 people and directly affected above 8 million people. Due to the destruction of houses in rural as well as in urban areas, people are forced to refuge in an open space. There is urgent need to provide basic needs (treated drinking water, food, medicine, tent, etc.).

New school session had just started, when the big earthquake striked on April 25. Due to this earthquake, many school buildings have been damaged. Before the earthquake, campaign was going on to convince the parents (specially from the rural area) to enroll their children in school. ECCA was also participating in this government led campaign.

After the earthquake, ECCA has mobilized youth volunteers in the community to provide immediate relief materials. Coordination is also being done with Nepal government, other civil society organizations, NGOs and international agencies.

Initially, your donation will help to meet the survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once initial relief work is complete, your support will be used to support longer-term recovery efforts.

Some of the relief activities carried out by ECCA are:

  • ECCA started production of chlorine solution (branded as WATASOL) from the very next day of earthquake. WATASOL production is being done by using all the available WATA devices, as per the technology developed by Antenna Technologies Switzerland. ECCA is distributing WATASOL in bottles of 60ml and 1 liter. WATASOL is tested for quality before distribution. Many volunteers came forward to support in the bottling and packaging of WATASOL. WATASOL has been supplied for use at the hospitals as well.
  • Water filters embedded with silver colloidal treated tulip filter candles have been distributed, which can filter murky water to remove impurities.
  • Self Help kits were distributed that contained helmets, wheel barrows, shovels, ropes and other tools essential to dismantle and manage the damaged houses.
  • Tents were provided to the needed families.
  • Medical camp has been set-up to provide treatment to the injured
  • Food package has been distributed

There is no doubt that Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) plays a vital role towards the cognitive and physical development of a child. The activities organized in ECDC through using various educational materials and games materials helps children to develop their brain along with increasing their socially networking skills. But, the ECDC’s being operated in various locations lacks proper facilities and enough educational materials in the centre, hence challenging the role of ECDC in child development. Hence, in order to extend our support towards ECDC, a day workshop on 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) was conducted on 31st January 2015, Saturday in ECCA hall.

The workshop was organized to raise funds for supporting painting activities in an ECDC established in Shree Mahakaleshwor Primary School located at Chitpol-6, Sanga through the “Support -a-Child” Campaign. The workshop also intended to aware youths on 3R concept and to share the role of ECDC in child development and its contribution in our society. Through this workshop, we also deliberate to increase the role of youth and their contribution in community based social organization like ECDC.

The practical sessions like paper recycling, reusing and discussion on reducing paper waste during the workshop helped the youth participants towards understating multiple aspects of 3 R Concept. All the participants enjoyed making paper from paper pulp, paper basket and weaving paper bags on their own. The games played during the workshop helped the participants to get along with each other and create a harmonious environment among the participants. The fund raised through the registration of participants,

Ms. Toya Homa expressed “I loved how the entire program was operated with the 3R theme and for a social cause i.e. support a child campaign. Games were the biggest highlight of this workshop. Not only were they entertaining, it was also the perfect medium to break ice between the participants. I would love to be part of your program again.”

“I enjoyed the program till the end. I learned what actually can be done from the waste papers. The program was further made exciting through games and dance which gave us zeal throughout the program” said Mr. Suyash Shrestha.

It is an accepted fact that these days people totally rely on computer technologies for communication and acquiring information. It is often heard from the gossips of people around that printed materials usage are diminishing everyday due to advancement in information technology through computers. Also, students all around the world are found well equipped with individual laptops, personal computers and advanced gadgets. Even a decade ago, in the context of Nepal, technology had not taken its pace the way we are experiencing now.  On one side, there is a remarkable improvement in information technology, for instance, the students of private boarding school, they are familiarized with English language and computer education right from the early age whereas the situation in government supported schools are not up to the level when compared with each other.

Without any biasness, the situation of education and the use of information technology is same as mentioned above in one of the government supported urban school - Shree Minnath Aadarsha Shikshya Sadan Lower Secondary School in Lalitpur District. But, through 'Support-A-Child” campaign being initiated by ECCA (Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness), this situation of school is being facilitated to bring some positive changes. International Volunteer, Ms Anna Waters from England, initiated to create a microproject titled “Provide Six Computers for Nepali School Students” in order to overcome the technological barrier being created between the students and technology. The support being initiated in the school is believed to provide knowledge and skills on information technology education and computer education for the students of grade six, seven and eight. The computer distribution program in the school is going to be organized in 21st November 2014.

We strongly believe that this activity will definitely help the students in order to raise their computer skills and english education in the long run and eventually make them competitive to face any challenges not only in the national level but also in the international level which otherwise would be really very difficult in the world of technology and english speaking environment in today's context.
