This report provides an update on the progress of the Support 350 Old People with Dementia in Imo State project (ID: 54327). Our mission is to improve the quality of life of older adults living with dementia by providing nutrition support, community care, caregiver education, and promoting healthy ageing through sustainable interventions.

Despite limited resources, we remain committed to restoring dignity, improving wellbeing, and supporting vulnerable elderly people and their caregivers across Imo State.

2. . Appreciation to Our Donors and GlobalGiving

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to every donor who supported this project during this reporting period. Your generosity is helping us bring hope, compassion, and practical assistance to elderly people living with dementia.

We are equally grateful to GlobalGiving for providing a trusted platform that connects our mission with caring individuals and organizations around the world. Your partnership strengthens our commitment to serving some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.

3. . Financial Summary

During this reporting period, we gratefully received $36.00 USD through GlobalGiving.

Although the amount is modest compared to the growing needs, every contribution represents hope and encouragement. Combined with support from our social enterprise, these funds help us continue planning and implementing activities that improve the wellbeing of older adults living with dementia.

4.. Project ActivitiesNutrition Support for Older Adults

We continued promoting the development of nutrient-dense fortified foods and nutraceutical diet products designed to support healthy ageing and improve the nutritional wellbeing of older adults.

Dementia Awareness and Caregiver Education

We continued raising awareness about dementia, emphasizing early recognition, compassionate care, and the importance of family and community support for older adults living with cognitive decline.

Samony Food Innovation

Through Samony Food Innovation, we continued developing affordable, nutritious food products that can help improve the dietary quality and overall health of elderly people and other vulnerable groups.

Food Innovation & Training Hub (FIT-Hub)

Through our Food Innovation & Training Hub (FIT-Hub), we continued promoting nutrition education, healthy ageing, food safety, and caregiver knowledge to strengthen community capacity for supporting older adults.

5. . Social Enterprise & In-Kind Contributions

In addition to donor support, our social enterprise continued providing in-kind contributions to sustain this project.

For the past three years, we have consistently donated food during the pilot testing of newly developed nutraceutical diet products and nutrient-dense fortified foods. These donations have benefited vulnerable individuals, including older adults, while allowing us to improve the quality, safety, and nutritional value of our products.

This approach demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that innovation directly benefits the communities we serve.

6. . Estimated Impact

Despite limited financial resources, the project continued to make meaningful progress.

Community Reach

Approximately 30–50 older adults, caregivers, and family members reached through dementia awareness and nutrition education.
10–15 vulnerable elderly persons benefited from nutrition-related support and community engagement.
Increased awareness among caregivers about dementia management, healthy ageing, and nutritional care.

Nutrition and Innovation

Continued development and refinement of nutrient-dense food products suitable for older adults.
Distribution of food samples during pilot product testing through our social enterprise.

Capacity Building

Caregivers and community members gained practical knowledge on dementia care, healthy nutrition, and improving the quality of life of older adults.

7. . Challenges

The growing number of elderly people requiring support continues to exceed available resources. Limited funding affects our ability to expand nutrition support, caregiver training, home-based care, and community outreach.

Greater financial support will enable us to reach more older adults living with dementia and provide more comprehensive care services.

8. . Prospects and Future Plans

In the coming months, we aim to:

Expand nutrition support for older adults living with dementia.
Increase caregiver education and community awareness programmes.
Strengthen community-based dementia support networks.
Develop additional nutraceutical and nutrient-dense food products tailored to the nutritional needs of older adults.
Build partnerships with healthcare providers, community organizations, and donors to improve dementia care across Imo State.

We remain optimistic that continued donor support will enable us to reach more elderly people and significantly improve their quality of life.

At the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF), we are committed to uplifting the lives of the elderly, especially those living with dementia, who are among the most vulnerable in our communities. Aging can be challenging, and for those facing dementia, daily life often comes with confusion, isolation, and reliance on caregivers.

The “Support 350 Old People with Dementia in Imo State” initiative is designed to provide nutrition, medical support, companionship, and dignity to elderly individuals living with dementia. By addressing their physical, emotional, and social needs, we aim to improve their quality of life and ensure they feel valued and cared for.

Project Activities During This Period

During this reporting period, the team has continued to provide ongoing support for the elderly, despite resource limitations.

Key activities include:

• Provision of nutrient-dense meals and fortified foods
• Regular check-ins with caregivers and families
• Conducting awareness and advocacy sessions about dementia care
• Preparing for future medical support and wellness programs once funding is available

We are particularly grateful for the consistency and generosity of our monthly donors, whose contributions have ensured that even in challenging periods, our elderly beneficiaries feel cared for, loved, and respected.

Challenges

Despite our ongoing efforts, the project faces several challenges:
• High cost of care – Dementia support requires nutrition, medical check-ups, and dedicated caregiving.
• Limited resources – Additional funding is required to scale services to reach all 350 elderly individuals fully.
• Logistics and coordination – Managing care across multiple communities requires careful planning and support.

Even with these challenges, our dedication remains unwavering. Every smile, every thankful word from our beneficiaries, reminds us why this work is so vital.

Little by Little Fundraising Campaign (17–20 March)

We are excited to remind our supporters that the Little by Little fundraising campaign will run from 17th to 20th March. This campaign presents a unique opportunity to directly enhance the lives of the elderly living with dementia.
Donations made during this campaign, while matching funds remain, will help:
• Provide more nutrient-dense meals for beneficiaries
• Enhance medical support, wellness programs, and caregiving resources
• Ensure sustainable care for all 350 elderly individuals
• Expand awareness campaigns on dementia in the community

Even small contributions go a long way, providing tangible support to those who need it most and ensuring that every elderly person under our care lives with dignity and comfort.

This quarter, your support brought compassion, dignity, and essential care to elderly persons living with dementia across Imo State. Despite worsening economic hardship, rising medical needs, and increasing neglect of the elderly, your generosity has continued to provide comfort, stability, and hope to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

What We Achieved This Quarter

Reached elderly dementia patients with nutritional support, including soft cereals, fruits, and easy-to-digest meals.
Provided essential care items such as adult diapers, bathing soap, disinfectants, and mild skincare products for sensitive aging skin.
Offered emotional and psychosocial support, including home visits, companionship activities, and caregiver engagement.
Identified more vulnerable seniors in rural areas who need urgent intervention.

Your support continues to help us restore dignity and improve the daily living conditions of dementia patients who have no one else to rely on.

Financial Update

This quarter, we received:
$18 from GlobalGiving donors
$95 from the Social Enterprise of the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation

Purchase of soft, nutrient-rich food items (custard, pap, fruits, milk): $52
Adult diapers, sanitary wipes, and personal hygiene items: $38

Why This Project Is Important

Dementia continues to leave many elderly people isolated, confused, and unable to meet their basic needs. In many rural communities in Imo State, older persons suffering from memory loss and cognitive impairment are left without structured care.

Looking Ahead / December Plans

Deliver Christmas Care Packs to elderly dementia patients (nutritious food, hygiene items, soft clothing).
