The Sujata Baskota Honor Education Funding

With the hope of creating a better public transport system for Filipinos, Meg worked as an architect for the government through the Department of Transportation for six years. Through her government work and collaboration with global companies, she realised that there was a lot more to learn about public transport. She was given the opportunity to pursue a double degree in urban mobility at Aalto University in Finland and learn from countries that have already built a good transportation system for their communities. 

Pursuing a specialised course provided more insights and perspectives that could be explored and applied in the Philippine public transport sector, including understanding transportation issues from a policy perspective. Studying urban mobility enabled Meg to look at other angles and understand whether there were compromises that had to be made to improve public transport, a sector that is predominantly led by men. There were instances when she was the only woman in meetings who crafted plans for the benefit of women and children—proof that representation was still a problem. 

As Meg aspires to be a woman leader and changemaker in the transportation sector, it is fitting that she sought the support of Wedu's funding, which is known for advocating for gender equality across all sectors. Wedu's funding has allowed Meg to realise her goals and aspirations, as it allows professionals such as her to bridge the gap between what she has and what she can do.

Once Meg graduates, she wants to use the insights into mobility she has gained to provide better access to education for the vulnerable, especially when it comes to transportation—a seemingly minuscule yet impactful part of everyday life.

Meg said, "My first priority is getting experience when it comes to mobility planning, policy development, and implementation in different scenarios of development that can be patterned to the different development needs of cities and provinces in the Philippines."

Ol, an engineer and a clean energy advocate, was born in a rural area of Cambodia where she grew up outside the electricity grid. She was the first woman in her village to enroll in a university degree, completing a Bachelors in Electrical and Energy Engineering in Phnom Penh on a full scholarship. Ol often engages in volunteer activities to promote science and engineering among high school students, and raised awareness about the potential of clean energy to hundreds of Cambodian university students during Clean Energy Week. Her efforts were recognized with the Clean Energy Award, honoring her commitment to advancing clean energy solutions.

With over five years of experience in the renewable energy sector, Ol has directly impacted over a thousand individuals by providing affordable solar power solutions and assisting nearly a thousand rice farmers with solar-powered water pumping services. Eager to extend her reach to impoverished farmers, she is devoted to creating a climate-resilient agricultural system that utilizes renewable energy to boost crop yields. Ol is pursuing a master's degree in Renewable Energy at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland to equip herself with the knowledge and skills needed to further drive meaningful change.

Through an income-sharing agreement from Wedu, Ol secured partial funding for her tuition fees, leveraging additional support to cover the remaining costs and living expenses. Ol is also matched with a Wedu mentor who supports her in navigatingacademic goals and refining leadership goals as she works towards realizing her vision for her community in Cambodia.

Ol said, "My focus is on developing practical renewable energy technologies tailored to benefit vulnerable groups within Cambodian, particularly by providing access to sustainable water for crop cultivation, thereby enabling them to increase their income."
