Train young Colombian women for a career in STEM

Hoy la tecnología marca el ritmo de nuestras vidas. El 89% de lo que hacemos en internet tiene que ver con una solución web, pero solo el 6% han sido creadas por mujeres. En américa latina las mujeres que trabajan en STEM representan tan solo el 10.36%. 

Cambiar esta realidad es posible y hoy desde MAKAIA estamos codificando una nueva historia. En nuestro bootcamp de código y programación hemos entrenado como desarrolladoras web a 134 mujer de 11 departamentos y 37 ciudades de Colombia. De los grupos activos a la fecha el 41% de las participantes son mujeres.

Desarrollamos capacidades y promovemos talento tecnológico diverso e inclusivo, con el potencial de transformar realidades a través de soluciones innovadoras, inspirando a más niñas, jóvenes y mujeres a ser parte de esta revolución, a seguir sus sueños y alcanzar su máximo potencial.

Today technology sets the pace of our lives. 89% of what we do on the internet has to do with a web solution, but only 6% have been created by women. In Latin America, women who work in STEM represent only 10.36%.

Changing this reality is possible and today at MAKAIA we are codifying a new story. In our code and programming bootcamp we have trained 134 women from 11 departments and 37 cities in Colombia as web developers. Of the active groups to date, 41% of the participants are women.

We develop capacities and promote diverse and inclusive technological talent, with the potential to transform realities through innovative solutions, inspiring more girls, young people and women to be part of this revolution, to follow their dreams and reach their full potential.

En el marco de nuestros esfuerzos por impulsar la participación de mujeres en el sector de la tecnología, hemos logrado que entre diciembre del 2022 hasta la fecha más de 80 mujeres de 9 departamentos y 20 ciudades de Colombiainicien su entrenamiento en Desarrollo Web logrando una participación del 42% de mujeres en nuestras cohortes. Este sin duda alguna es el primer paso para acceder a grandes oportunidades de empleo en un sector que está en rápido crecimiento. 

Ser parte del Bootcamp de MAKAIA significa para estas mujeres no solo desarrollar competencias técnicas en roles Tech, sino que, además, les permite contar con un acompañamiento profesional para el fortalecimiento de habilidades para la vida como la comunicación asertiva, el trabajo colaborativo, el pensamiento crítico y creativo, entre otras habilidades necesarias para responder a los cambios y desafíos del mundo actual. 

Adicionalmente, durante su experiencia potenciamos el perfil para la inserción laboral a través de talleres prácticos, mentorías personalizadas y formación continua en marca personal, Linkedin, creación de hoja de vida y simulacro de assesments con empresas de tecnología y el acompañamiento en toda su experiencia de conexión con oportunidades de empleo.

Within the framework of our efforts to promote the participation of women in the technology sector, between December 2022 to date, more than 80 women from 9 departments and 20 cities in Colombia begun their training in Web Development, reaching 42% of participation of women in our bootcamp´s cohorts. This is undoubtedly the first step to access great employment opportunities in a rapidly growing sector.

Being part of the MAKAIA´s Bootcamp means for these women not only to develop technical skills in Tech roles, but also allows them to have professional support to strengthen life skills such as assertive communication, collaborative work,  critical and creative thinking, among other skills necessary to respond to the changes and challenges of today's world.

Additionally, his experience enhances the profile for job placement through practical workshops, personalized mentoring and continuous training in personal branding, updating Linkedin profiles in industry standards, creation of atractive resumes, simulation of assessments prosses with technology companies and support throughout the first approach experiences with job opportunities.

Nuestra formación en Desarrollo Web tiene un enfoque especial en las mujeres, buscando incrementar su participación en el sector tecnológico y fomentando su acceso a este mercado que hoy ofrece estabilidad laboral, oportunidades y salarios.

Academia Geek is seeking for women interested in Web Development training to fulfill their goal of connecting with a job opportunity in the Technology sector.  

Sara is an example of this, she came to our Bootcamp with the dream of changing her life and the life of those around her, transforming the future through programming. 

 “Last year I made the decision to give my professional life a new direction, and I found in Academia Geek the perfect opportunity to do so. My experience in Academia Geek was very enriching, not only at a technical level, but also in a personal level, they have an exceptional side to side support and job placement, which is an essential because you leave the academy to the labor market."  

Since 2019, Academia Geek has trained 215 people, 68 of them are women and 42 are employed in the technology sector, reducing the existing gender gap in the sector and generating more opportunities for women to enhance their skills in the field. In Latin America, only 30% of women are part of the TI industry.  

Sara finished her training at the Bootcamp and only 3 weeks later she signed her contract as a Junior Consultant for a national IT company.  

“The expectations that remain in the future are showing the results of this training, to carry the name of Academia Geek proudly, and keep the professional and academic growth.” 

Yudith, a Venezuelan migrant, arrived in Colombia 4 years ago with her family, looking for a better future and a job opportunity that would allow her to continue her studies in systems and give a better quality of life to her daughters.  

A friend recommended Academia Geek to her and she assures that this changed her life forever. She had intensive training for 12 weeks, but the support of her family was fundamental to achieve the goal of successfully completing her process. "I am currently in a job I love, doing something I studied for, forging a future for my daughters and for my family, all this thanks to Academia Geek" states Yudith.  

A total of 43 women have been trained at Academia Geek in the last three months, acquiring the necessary knowledge to become Junior FrontEnd Web Developers, breaking paradigms in the technology sector, being employed in recognized companies, with good working conditions and decent salaries to transform their lives and those of their families.
