During the past three months, we launched our backpack program. This provides weekend lunches to kids that arrive at school Monday morning exhibiting overt signs of hunger. The food is nutritious, but “kid friendly” so they can prepare it themselves if a parent isn’t available. One of the mom’s cried when she learned of the program “I didn’t know people cared” she said. During the summer months we will support the Saturday lunches at McKinley Elementary, one of the to schools we support.
Our food pantry is operating well. We are now fully staffed with volunteers. Our demand varies between 15 to 50 families supported in a given week. We are beginning to see more needy students from Portland Community College, which is located across the street from our pantry. We are beginning to see more rent and utility requests. This past month we have begun our partnership with Northwest Childrens Outreach which provides clothing to children of families in need.
